Primary Fuel Filter Changeout

This is what we did.

1. Disconnected Battery.

2. Moved alternator out of the way.

3. Loosen bolt holding canister and filter.

4. Took off canister and looked inside.

5. Cleaned canister out and check filter.

6. Put old filter back and screwd canister up by hand.

7. Finished brining canister up to position by tightening 1" bolt.

8. Put alternator back into position and reconnected battery.

9. Went up to secondary fuel filter and bled system.

10. Started engine up and went for 4-5 mile ride.

Everything seemed okay and runs fine.

We did clean out the pet cocks and checked for water and debris before doing this process and there seemed to be very little if no water at all.

There was a small amount of tiny particals in the bottom of the glass jar.

Now I need to find the correct filters before going forward.

We did not remove the entire bracket or remove the fuel lines from each side of the Primary Fuel filter housing.

Is this an issue, or did we do it correclty.

It seem to only really take about 30 minutes to do?

Cten,
You did a top notch job! Next time you might want to actually change the filter itself. Fine particles can build up over time to slow down the filter's capacity to keep up with the engine's fuel demands. This will more likely cause a reduction in top end speed. However, it might also cause filter failure and allow unfiltered fuel to reach the secondaries or worse.

Thats all there is. No need to remove the housings or lines.
I helped out my brother with fuel filters today. His was filled with rust/gunk and required some cleaning, the other two were fine. We were able to get to his without moving the alt..

The filter numbers are for NAPA Gold

Qty - 1 napa gold 3511

Qty - 2 napa gold 3512 with two 5070 gaskets (the ones that come with the filter are too big)

Remember this - Fuel filters are cheap and plentiful, injector pumps are not [thumbzup]

GOOD LUCK ~ Pappa-G

If you notice the Z shaped bracket that holds to primary filter to the frame, is bolted to the top of the c channel of the frame. If you remove the two 3/8 bolts holding it to the frame and relocate the Z bend under the lip of the c channel of the frame the next time you do a filter job you won't have to move the generator out of the way. That extra clearence is enough to fit the 1 inch wrench on the bolt and between the generator and the filter housing. Just reuse the bolts back in the same holes.

When we did it the second time to make sure that there was fuel going into the primary fuel housing we did not have to move the alternator at all.

Just used a 1" wrench and it came off like a charm without moving anything.
