Primer on modern tire upgrades for the deuce?

Well, I would really like to stick with singles in front and duals in back.

Michelin XZL's seem to look really nice. Also suit my purpose (highway and off-road) And I like the specs shown for the 11R20s on that military tire comparison chart another poster linked to on the first page of this thread.

They'll work on the stock split rims, right? I'm now thinking I want to stick with original rims, otherwise it'll be awhile before I can afford to upgrade.

How about duals? Is there enough room or will 11R20s rub against eachother? I've read some conflicting stuff about this.

11R20's are recommended for 8 inch rims. The deuce rims are 7 inches so probably not as big of a risk as some other wild combos I have seen around here. Problem is .. good luck finding them XZLs. If you are going 11R20s then the military surplus tires are pretty much Firestone T-831s :

New here they are $250, used you can get them for about 125-150 I think. So singles up front and 8 duals + tubes and flaps in the rear - 8 x (150 + 40 +10) = about $1600 + mounting .. and then you still need to single the front - add another $1000 for that.

Personally, I think a lot of guys single their trucks to save money on tires

Whatever combo you are contemplating, someone here has already done it and posted fotos. Do a search (T-831 for example) and you'll find more tire combo fotos that you ever dreamed of.

I'm running XZL's on my tipper. No problem with the 11R20's on the stock rims on the rears. Currently using spares from my M35 on the front.

11Echo - please let us know what you paid for those XZL's ? Were they new and who did you go thru.

I'm planning on running single Firestone T831 11.R20 radials on mah deuce, but haven't figured out what wheels I want to mount them on. I'd like to run modified HEMTT wheels, but they're too wide. The Canadian bead-locked wheels are a viable option, but I would prefer wheels with even less backspacing. What about the older one-piece wheels from the Ford trucks & schoolbuses though? Are those all 22's, or are there any 20" one-piece wheels with the right lug pattern, width, and backspacing out there?

Short answer. No. Those older Ford rims and the Hino rims are all 22.5s as far as I know.

The other problem with those is that unless you can find the newer Hino/Fedex truck wheels, you are looking at ford rims that are 30 to 40 years old. Not optimal IMO.

WOW I got a deal! $80.00 per tire locally. Find someone close by that has the GL scrap rubber contract.

Not trying to rain on everyone's parade here - just trying to point out all the facts.

Couple other things to consider - the stock NDT tires do NOT last very long. You can do the search here, I would say they last 10,000 to 15,000 miles MAX. For comparison, big rig tires last hundreds of thousands of miles if well cared for and then can be recapped.

If you are worried about split rims (I know I'm not thrilled about them) consider that if they are mounted as duals on the tandems, the ring that is so dangerous is on the INSIDE of the duals.

Moral of the story : Always get someone else to change and mount your tires and you don't have to worry about split rims on the rear tandems. And the T-831s are as ubiquitous and cheap as anything out there (and look as good as the XZLs).

Also remember that almost all of the modified singles (HEMTT) rims being hawked around here are two piece rims, which means if you have enough muscle power, you can change them yourself. A lot of guys don't even carry full spares on their truck, they just carry and extra tire (w/o the rim).

What rims are you using on that truck? Those fronts don't look like standard M35A2 split rims.

And is it just my imagination or are those front tires alot wider than the rears?

I have installed 11R /22.5 1 piece rims !!! Steers way eaiser and tires are everywhere. Rims came from a recycle trash truck. about 4" total taller than 9:00 20s.

Did that start life as a dump truck from the factory or did you convert it from a regular M35A2?

My tipper is a M342A2 Deuce Dump truck. Just not a lot of them out there. It has reinforcement plates along the frame rails and a few other items different from a M35. Pics in other threads I've posted in.

My tires I bought used military surplus, 90-95% tread. I paid more than Blacktop did for his and what Alredneck has been selling his for.
I paid $33 for 11R20 radial tubes and the 9.00x20 flaps are ok to use in the 11's.

I just seen a guy I know pick up 7 3958520 from our military tire retailer for 600 bucksand they are basixally brand new. If I hadn't seen the reciept I wouldn't have believed it. I bought stock 900-20s for my deuce which were brandnew with flaps and tubes for 75.00 a piece last year. There are deals on tires just keep looking.
