PTO gear bits found in tranny?

I was changing the tranny oil in the deuce yesterday and had the inclination to run a magnet along the bottom of the case. The inclination came about by the PTO not engaging and the winch cable was jammed up tight. It looks like someone ran the PTO until something broke. The truck shifts ok and doesnt jump out of gear.

The below pics are what I found, do these look like PTO gears to you all?

Drove over to Red Stick and registered her last week. If you go looking for DMV in BR, have fun, took me an hour to find them with the instructions they gave...got there 10 minutes before they closed but did it anyway. Also found out that I can register the CUCV the same way!!! WooHoo!!

Well, got her up and running and drove her to work 3 times so far. Really freaked out the bosses and such! Course it just confirmed to them that I am Loco! :cookoo:. My Chief had the young lady started and warming up waiting for my arrival at the end of each watch....guess we got a convert! He wants one now!

Got under her and lubed all the zerks again and all of the u-joints took 10-12 squirts...guess I gotta change them all out. Everything else took only 1 or 2 squirts. Changed out all of the L/O except for the front axle so far, will do that Monday. Changed over the old hydraulic brake switch to the air one, pretty easy, but had to chase down small parts to do it. Will flush the brakes next week, gotta rig up a pressure bleeder.

All in all, doing pretty good!! Thanks for asking Bryan!!

It's hard to say for sure where the pieces came from. I'd pull the top of the transmission off and look inside. You can even pull the driveshaft to the transfer, then the rear bearing retainer and the mainshaft can be removed for more room.

Tim,

Er, Uh, I drove it home from San Antonio to Lake Charles like this, didnt know the PTO was knackered at the time.

Bryan came over a couple of weeks ago and we tried to get the winch in gear and also the PTO in gear. We could not get either to turn or engage, so we knew something was wrong, but not 'what' was wrong.

All of the diffs had new oil in them from the get go and I changed the lubes in the rears last week just for grins and giggles. Found nothing out of the ordinary with the diffs. The tranny and transfer case had new oil in them as well. I magnetic swept both of them extensively, just in case. There were no small shavings, etc, these bits are the only thing I found.

Think I'm gonna pull the cover like stretch recommended and take a look at the guts, just to make sure. Guess I'll also pull the PTO off and take a look in there as well.

hmmm, now I gotta find a plate for the PTO cover, wait, bryans offshore, I dont think he'll miss his!! .

Thanks for all the info and help guys!

I had the same problem except its my tranfer case.Went to change the fluid and the magnet was full of metal pieces. In about 2 weeks Im going to drain it and filter it,see what else the magnet gets.

Yes, those chips come from the PTO input gear (right cut helix)

or use the one from your own PTO...?

G.
GT,

Thanks for the reply, I was thinking the same thing about the gears, just wasnt sure. I've been into smaller transmissions and PTOs (1ton) but have never been into the deuces. The 2 largest pieces were only 1/2" wide and the way they were cut lead me to believe the same as you.

As far as looking for a plate to cover the PTO while it is out, I was trying to yank Bryans chain as he is offshore. I have a friend of mine that has a machine shop, I'll take the PTO over to his shop and fab a blank myself, looks real easy, as Tim says.

Thanks all!
