You time it when you install it. Correct pointer on the balancer, timing window off and at mark, HH timing cover off and at scribe or red mark. I remove the forward valve cover and rotate engine to ensure I'm at TDC on compression stroke on #1. If I didn't do that I suppose I could do the rest and get it 180 out. The TM is pretty clear on this procedure (not all TM's are very clear but this one is good). Read it through before and while you do it. You'll be surprised how easy it actually is.
