It might break it loose but then you would have a rusted ring hitting a rusted spot in the cylinder wall...

That's the point of cranking it over several times by hand with the oil in there. It clears out the rust when an engine is improperly stored for any length of time (proper storage would include fogging oil to prevent this in the first place). If you just crank up the truck, the rust will knock the crap out of the rings, so you clear it off first. I mean, you could pull the heads, I guess, to clear it out by hand.

Got a better plan?

At this point it doesn't even matter if you start it or not. 8 year sitting does cause serious damage alone. Your injection pump and injectors, fuel lines and tank are already contaminated. I'm sure it will never start up anyway unless all this is fixed cause of the damaged pump. To see you can just empty the old fuel and add new fuel. Your question is why was it sitting for such a long time? Is the engine good?
