Question on Govplanet observations

Noticed a few common things on GP when looking at humvees.

Why are a lot of the instrument clusters pulled? Not pulled like removed but just enough to access whatever is behind them.

On a lot of them the rear seats are gone and if they were a pickup model the cargo floor covers are gone. What do they call those parts?

I’ve heard some guys say you can inspect in person before you bid…is that legit? Doesn’t sound right.

Buy a running truck! Unless you’re like a few from here that can solve your own problems. I bought a non-runner and I was able to make it a runner with help from the members on this forum.

Some auction yards allow you to walk in and look at every piece of equipment. The local one is at the back of a Richie Brother's yard, and you don't even have to sign in. You tell them "govplanet" and they wave you right through. Then you get to the govplanet section and wait for the guy working to come over and you let him know what you're doing, whether it's a pick-up or just browsing.

Other yards seem to consider it a liability issue or something, and you can't see anything until they bring it out to load it up.

parts get cannibalized to keep others going. Some parts are stolen along the way on trucks that sit for sometimes years in yards before getting sold.

Panels pulled to get at connectors for light switch or any goodies behind dash etc

The oe seat fabric has a lot to be desired as it is thin and rips easily when weathered and good seats or cushions are "repurposed" before turn in.

Not sure what you are refencing on the cargo floor covers? Do you mean the floormats for the back seat wells or the cover on the hump? Rear 2 mans have bare beds. Never seen a floormat or bed mat on them.

I thought he meant the filler panels to make the bed flat/cover the seat wells in the rear.

I picked up my first M1101 on Ft Lewis and it was moderately supervised. If I was the type of person that helps himself to things, I could have helped myself to things.

When I picked up my 2nd M1101 it was at a big yard in Lakewood, and there was nobody on site whatsoever. That was scary because mine was the best trailer in the yard, and one of the few with all the parts (like both support legs). I was glad I picked up as soon as possible.

The rear door that came with my M1165 is not the one in the pictures, so someone at the yard swapped their less desirable door for mine. The pics also show a battery hold-down bracket that never arrived with the truck, and l think someone picking up their truck grabbed it when they were swapping doors. Alternatively, motorpool might be running through the yard like it's a small parts supermarket.

Those things should been made a claim to Iron Planet as easy to document with pictures! Similar thing happened to me with a trailer at Camp Shelby. I refused pick up and got a full refund but it was a hassle to deal with.

In the GL days, I was at a location that was not a usual selling location. Actually I think they only came up once and had no onsite GL rep. On pick up, a very ,very senior enlisted asked me many questions about my hobby and how cool it was. He then pointed out to me that all the stuff in the yard was a headache for him and DLA had been dragging their feet on removing some items even going years..... I was told anything in his site was ok to pull as none was on his books and he could care less what happened....and would escort me off base to the commercial gate :)

There is a huge distinction to be made between a non-running truck, and an incomplete truck.

Consider every unit that operates HMMWVs, almost inevitably over time, will end up with vehicles which broke something substantial, that become sidelined & are no longer operational. These are commonly 'harvested' for any parts necessary to maintain the rest of the fleet. When the time comes to thin the herd, of course they surplus the parts rigs first and the beat up rigs second. Wouldn't you keep the best?

If you spot ANY major mechanical component missing in the pics(i.e. no alternator), there is likely more missing and much more wrong with the vehicle then is obvious. You'll have the major problem that sidelined the rig to start, and all the stuff missing that was harvested along the way. Putting such a basket case back together will be far more expensive in the end then buying a complete rig.

Regarding the instrument clusters:
-could be related to demil. access to remove something else that had to be removed. Really common for anything touched during demil to be disposed of.
-as a sign to say 'this truck is a non-runner'
-a guage wasn't working on another rig and easier to just grab the whole thing off a donor
