I recently installed a clear 10 micron prefilter in front of my canister. I like being able to see the fuel, and it's movement. I may add a pressure gauge in the future.
I was asked why I installed the pre-filter- I run low %s of WMO to offset fuel cost. It is filtered to 5 microns before use and I have never had any problems. Should I ever, the pre filter will clog first due to size and being in front of the main filter. I can remove it from the loop, and bleed much easier vs. pulling the canister on the highway. If I had an electric fuel pump and no WMO, I would probably not run the prefilter.
The canister is more readily available and fiters better than the factory cartridge, and does not leak. It was installed on my truck by the Forestry Service when I bought it. Downside is the water in fuel sensor function is also lost along with the fuel pressure switch- used for diagnostic testing only.
