Who has this system on their deuce and where do you buy your replacement cylinders? I have looked at them online and 30.00 seems expensive for a can of ether.

Anybody try using propane instead? The spontaneous combustion point of propane VS ether is only 50 deg difference.

I also would like to know how propane works out. I haven't performed a search on SS, but I can't believe this hasn't been tried before. Anyone tried propane?

I have an ether system on my Deuce and recently purchased three new NOS military canisters from another SS member. I understand that you can get up to 315 shots per canister, according to the text on the canisters. I have used about ten shots of ether since I received my Deuce from GL and I am still using the original canister that was installed when it was picked up. It works great, but is normally not needed except when the temperature is in the low teens or below. I also use a block heater when I can.

Well the propane cylinder fits the quick start valve, but unfortunately it is not cold enough here today to use the system.....

Propane combusts at 500 deg F and ether is 550 deg. the only reason that i think it might not work is that the propane will be a gas and the ether a liquid.

Napa is the only place I can get the refills around here and I am not paying 47.50 per can for ether:roll: I don't even need the system around here but the empty bracket under the hood is bothering me:-D

If you use up and entire canister of ether on one of these things you will have to let us know how many times you started your truck with it. There is a lot of ether in one of these bottles and I can't see $30 being too much for one with as much as they hold.

I am not real good at math but my 1.97 can of walmart special ether is 11 oz, and the 30.00 quick start cylinder is advertised as being 18 oz:wink:

$1.97 + new engine = a bit over $30.00
Penny wise and dollar foolish ???
Were does the new engine come in?

No matter what system I am using as long as there is diesel in the fuel tank the engine is getting the same amount of lubrication as it gets every time it is started, with or without ether. Besides my walmart can says that it has a lubricant added to it, as does the Quick Start cylinder.

There used to be two main problems with ether and diesel... the first was lubrication which has been solved by adding mineral spirits to it....after which manufacturers started marking their cans "diesel safe".... the second is the flash point of ether and it contacting hot glow plugs, but a deuce does not have glow plugs....

I may just take an empty propane cylinder and paint it green and attach it to the quick start system...

I just bought a new canister this fall...like drgreg said, $27 from a truck repair shop. NAPA is too expensive. The 18 oz cylinder should give you about 90 shots to start your trucks with.

1 fl oz is equal to about 29.5 CC...each metered shot is supposed to be 6 CC per the quickstart website.

For what you get, I would just find a big truck garage and ask them to order you a canister of the right stuff...quickstart part # 820-0327

propane does not work that well for me. I have tried it a couple of times. I have not used a system like the ether shot.. I just stuck the hose in the intake and turned it on. Tom at Alfa says he has good luck starting the 6.2 that way... I would stick with the ether.

It got down to 17 this morning and my Quick Start would actuate so I tried the propane. It actually works....... I gave it 4 doses and each time I could hear the engine try and hit and on the 5th she fired up. I think if this thing could be adjusted to hold more propane per dose it would work a lot better.

That may be another advantage to the ether....more dense, liquid vs. gas what ever, but maybe the ether needs less than propane to work properly. the only times I've had to use mine, she fired after one shot....granted, it was only about 25 or so, but it still fired.

At those temps I could have probably got it running without the ether, but I figured I didn't spend almost $30 on the bottle for nothing, plus cranking for 5 seconds vs. 20 seconds in my book is better.

Mine fires up at 10 degrees w/out needing the ether but it would start quicker with. 1 snort is all I've ever haven to give her and she roars to life.

Wasn't trying to say anything bad, so don't take it that way (not that I think you did but just in case). I went out and grabbed one of my cans of the Quick Start ether that I have for my truck. 22 fluid ounces (650CC's, 18 oz weight) and it says on the can depending on valve size the can will provide 120 to 315 shots. Difference in the cost is mainly packaging. You want something more automated, you pay more.

Okay so I broke down and bought the ether refill for the starting system. Ether does work better than propane, go figure:mrgreen:

So, do you think cheaper options are a better choice now?

I have done a lot of reading up on these systems since I started this thread and yes I agree they are better than spraying a can of ether at the air intake. For starters I only need one person to do it with the injection system.

In the long run even if I have to buy a can per year it will be cheaper than the power bill on a plug in style heater.

And before anybody asks: I did restart the truck and let her warm up for 30 minutes before shutting back down.
