Reading the TM Saved My Deuce!!

OK, so I am still technically a newbie to having a MV. So after reading allot of posts I decided to read some of the TM's to familiarize myself with my new truck.. I am sure glad I read the PSMultifuelOperators.pdf which is a great one for learning about the deuce. Specifically I am glad I read the part of draining the primary fuel filter before each startup. This is what came out of the first time I drained it since owning it. Now at first I let a little drain out on to the ground and then when I saw this garbage coming out of it I decided to grab a bottle. Now the brown stuff at the bottom is all water and the yellowish stuff at the top is the fuel which should be light green. Not sure if you can see the black particles swimming around in this junk either.. If that water ever made it to the engine I would have been in trouble. I am guessing I pulled out about a 1/2 cup of water out of the primary filter. Now I have to check the secondary and final to see if there is anything in those as well. Thank God for this website and the TM's!!!:beer:

If that much crud came through to the primary imagine what is still in the tank.

As a preventative measure I would change all the filters after draining and cleaning the fuel tank.

There is a plug on the bottom of the tank that will allow you to drain almost everything out of the tank. Make sure you have a big enough catch container to hold what is in the tank.

Use the drained stuff for fire starting unless there is almost no crud or water in it. If you have to recycle the fuel let it sit out in the sun (in a sealed container) and settle out for a few days and pump off the top leaving a few inches of stuff on the bottom.

Replace the plug and put a few gallons of gas in there to remove any more crud that may be in there. Drain that out and then put clean diesel in there for a while (before running any alternative fuel).

IMHO that is the best way to clean out the system.

Thanks for the tips, I was planning on changing everything now that I saw what was in the filter! Perhaps after being all cleaned out I may start getting up the hills again!

Wreckermans method works. Do it, and you will have peace of mind knowing your fuel system is 100% good to go. Check the in tank pump also for operation. I drained my tank/changed filters when I first got mine, I had about 2 gallons of crud in it. After the cleaning, it ran better, and I knew that was one less potential failure point.

After draining the tanks on my deuces, I put a few gallons of gasoline in and drain it again. I repeat until the crud stops coming out. when you only drain the diesel once, there can still be a lot of crud hanging on the inside of the tank.

Sooo.. just got to draining out some fluid from the secondary and Final filters.. Here is what I got at least a full cup of water out of these two.. Whew..glad I did it! Previous owner obviously didn't do much of any preventative care..

Just so I am clear. The manual you are talking about states that you should drain off about a pint of fuel to then check for water and dirt. You said that you drained your primary filter. Since the manual has you turning the power system on to supply 24vdc to the fuel pump, I do not see how you could ever "drain" the primary filter until the fuel tank is emptied. Not trying to be difficult or a stickler but just trying to understand things. I have been draining off a pint of fuel prior to each start-up and am finding less and less dirt and no water in my primary while the secondary filter shows no visible particles. Just darkened fuel after I put in 10 gallons of filtered wmo / gasoline / diesel / kerosene mix and it seems to be running better, smoother and quieter. Gotta love 'em.

I am also just asking for clarity if one should drain the primary filter without the fuel pump being on. I am assuming that I am correct in that one would not want to open the fuel system without fuel pressure or you will loose the system prime. Correct? I ran my John Deere 4320 (4 cyl. trb diesel) out of fuel once. I will never do that again. It took forever to prime the system to get it to run again.

Sorry, bad choice of words I guess. Just drain off some fuel, enough to see if there is any water in it and yes you need the fuel pump on otherwise you will just get an air sucking sound coming out. Since the water will be at the bottom then you just need a little. I would use something like a small cup like for pills or such, but something clear so you can see if there are any drops of water in it. Since I never drained it before, I used a bigger bottle. If you check the primary and there is no water then you are probably OK on the Secondary and Final filter. Since I found allot I checked all three and now will also check the drain on the bottom of the fuel tank to see what gunk comes out.
