Pound for pound and dollar for dollar the double splined axle and single lockout hub is your best bet. The Remco could be controlled in the cab which is nice but the fwd axle will be the constant driving alxe, it's also the axle that slips the most when driven as a single axle. Someone may get lucky enough to scrounge scrap parts and put something together but not many will find those old Reo axles. Save your brain cells and buy the axle/hub or test your fab skills and do the big Remco.

With the two rear axles coupled without an interaxle differential, there are side effects when driving on firm, good traction pavement, vehicle will want to go straight and resists turning with larger turning circle and front tire scrubbing (excessive wear and cupping) as a result....

An interaxle diff will even tire wear as well.
