Rear main oil seal?

I have a question? Is the rear main oil seal flush with the block? My Mechainc is changing the transmission next weekend and Im going to have him change it too. He asked what kind of seal is it and how does it come out? Any Pictures?

The main seal goes "flush" in any case, (normally) pressed into the 6-bolt seal retainer or (seldom case) directly in the flywheel housing, not the block itself.
