Rear mounted spare tire anyone??

Hello gentlemen, I am planning on moving my spare tire to the rear of my M109A3 to make room for an aux fuel tank. I remembering seeing a pic or two of this on SS deuces. Does anyone have a pic or even better, how you did it? I've got a couple ideas. My first idea is to set up the spare tire winch and use the crossarm on the frame to mount it. However I would need to have a spacer fabricated as the spare tire would be in conflict with the rear axle. Another idea is to use the same cross arm and mount two fuel tank brackets and have the spare tire rest on the brackets. I like to utilize the spare tire winch to secure the tire.
I threw down a tire on the deck to see what I would be looking at for spacing.
Any ideas? Please advise

So you want to mount a spare under the rear of the 109 chassis? That sounds like alot of work only to realize it doesn't work well. No room in the box? No way to hang it off the back door next to the boarding ladder? What about a front mount like on the "mystery machine" from Scooby doo?

I have always thought a front bumper mount would look good on the deuce and could be hinged so as to release down to touch ground without having to lift the tire off the bumper mount!

Could you not make a arm that pivots up and out to mount tire too... like a blazer or someother suv that has a swinging spare tire holder... just need a way to assist in raising and lowering so as not to have to require hernia surgery after changing a tire..

Hi Gimp, I thought about putting the spare in the van, in a trailer, on the roof. But I keep going back to the rear mounted idea. It probably is alot of work, that's what makes it so appealing:). No mystery machine...LOL, winch is in the way:)

I keep picturing something that fits in the clevis mounts that can hinge the spare to the ground as your best method to re-locate.

Maybe a mount on the rear door, you could install a longer cable on the spare tire winch. Have the wire/wires run up to a pulley mounted to the top of the door and back down through the mount. That way the tire could be tilted "up right" so it could be bolted to the door parallel? Thats a tough one man.

IMHO, you really don't have the room "out back" to do what you want. What about mounting the spare tire winch and mount in between the fender and bumper? I do like the idea about using the gun ring bracket to mount the spare on the passenger side. Kinda like the old Dodge WCs?

What are you planning on mounting where the spare tire is/was? Might be easier to figure out somewhere else to put that? I'm not running a spare on Mah Deuce, and I'm on singles. Carrying a spare on the trailer, and making brackets so I can chain-up an axle.

I took some measurements awhile back thinking of doing the same thing on my deuce, seems that the wheel would fit between the frame rails but would eliminate any good ground clearance in the rear,I decided to keep my spare where its at and mount an aux tank in the bed, one that I can just transfer out of with my harbour freight transfer pump,I know you don't have that aux tank option with your 109, but can you imagine trying to drop and remount that ( what's got to weigh 250 lbs ) spare by yourself from any other position?

Great question for us 109 owners.

We also have 50 gallon spares mounted in place of the spare OEM fitment.
Bumper mount - no. Obstruction plus blocks the radiator.
Passenger floorboard - no. Wife wants to use her own door.
No other clear un-obstructed area on the 109 to fit it.

I did although consider using a semi trailer landing geared leg - mount this to the left rear as we are not using it anyhow. Crank the leg down and on the bottom what would be called the "sand leg" rotate this and weld it vertical - then intall 2 wheel studs. So when you cranked it down & had your flat tire sitting vertical - yoiu could snatch it up and crank the leg up.

But now with the access of having trailers that concept stopped in the makings so I have no other info to give you except the idea. It would also have to be able to handle a 200 lb tire getting bounced around in the woods.

Hi Jess, I picked up a few 50 Gallon deuce fuel tanks up at Brad's place. I'm going to mount one of those tanks where the spare tire carrier currently resides.

DANG! Looks like the rear-hung spare would give the deuce a departure angle roughly equivalent to that of a Cadillac Hearse with blown rear suspension airbags. So much for off-roading that modification.:deadhorse:aua:doh:

Another Idea.....

Why not make a porch off the back of the truck, that you can mount the spare tire winch to. And have the whole porch crank into place.

You still carry the spare tire, you have a porch to sit on.....
