WRONG, a strap flying back CAN/WILL KILL you.

Same goes for wirerope etc. The only thing that is marginally safer as far as I can recall is actually using chain since the weight of it will simply drag itself down when it breaks.... BUT BUT, if you are winching etc always attach weights to your lines, that way you at least significantly reduce the chance that the line goes live and flying if the tension snaps it.
