red's M119 camper and other uses

M119 I picked from auction not too long ago. Don't know if the air brakes or either AC units work yet. Very little rust or other damage, lights work and the tires are in ok condition.

Took a few years but finally have my shell for a camper build! Tracked well behind my friends m915a2 but something is causing alot of wind drag. Thought it might be the brakes at first but they never got hot during the recovery trip. Thinking it's either the door on the front doesn't seal well at speed, or one of the 2 AC units on the roof is letting enough air in to be a problem. Enough drag to cut the fuel economy in half compared to towing his similar sized refrigerated trailer.

Good looking starting point, check out the the hubs for good grease and bearings, and if you have Dayton wheels and hubs make sure your wheels and tires are running true.

Will do, hub service and getting the brakes operational again are at the top of the list for it. Interesting to me that it's light enough my 1 ton can pull it (if it could work the air brakes). Also needs new mud flaps.

Have a replacement spare tire mount that will be installed.

Once that is complete then the interesting parts start. Haven't decided on a layout for the camper yet but goals are to sleep 2-4 comfortably, shower, toilet, indoor kitchen with a sink and stove, tv that I can hook up to for movies (no satelite), hot/cold water, good for extended periods of time. The door at the very front is kinda messing with designs.

Thanks, will start working on it soon. It appears pretty solid right now and no funky smells either haha.

The front door might get sealed off and a different door added to the passenger side, like the m146's

Looks like that one has the roof raised up somehow. Dept of Energy did that kind of thing at the Nevada test sites.

As to the extra drag I bet it might be the rooftop ac units just being up there, they will actually cause a major amount of drag vs a flat roof.

Interesting, wonder why they did that. I'm 5'10" and there is more than enough head room.

The drag was substantial, will have to check if maybe the ac was left were it allows air in. The front ac unit is mounted with the intake forward by the looks of it.

Just got the wrecker back to the lot today and will be back to working on projects again. Pickup has priority and will take about 2 weekends to get it useful. Steps of some kind for the camper will be a early project so I can get into it easier hahaha.

Didn't do any actual work to the trailer lately but did some brainstorming. Mostly for spare tire mount, mud flaps, and storage boxes. Part of the plan for this trailer is to have multiple beds (same with the wrecker plans). So started laying out plans along the chassis for tool boxes to carry the common tools. Debating on whether to try mounting the MEP002a to the chassis between the frame rails or mount it to one of the beds instead.
