Replacing the pintle hitch

The ball as the base is what I'm using on my M1008, bolts right up. But you can't drop it any if the trailer sets to high, also you lose the turning of the pintle for off roading. Please keep in mind that the M1009 is NOT an ideal tow rig, as it has been covered many times here.

Need to pull my log splitter, it will not tow anything else I own, truck runs fine, but would not want to tow anything bigger than about 1000 pounds.

Except that per the -10 maunal, the M1009 is only rated to tow a M416 1/4 ton trailer.

Towing Capacities of CUCV Models.​
M1009.​
Equipped to tow M416 Series 1/4 ton trailers with maximum towed load
of 1200 pounds for both cross-country and highway travel. Load on tongue should
not exceed 100 pounds.
FA1008, M1008A1, M1028, M1028A1, M1028A2, and M1028A3, Equipped to tow
M101 Series 3/4 ton trailers with maximum towed load of 3100 Ibs. Load on tongue

should not exceed 300 Ibs.

That has more to do with brakes and wheelbase than anything else. That and it has to fit into the Army's trailer fleet. So if the actual "maximum towed load" was, say, 1800, and there was no trailer to suit that, it would have to fall to whatever the heaviest trailer below the actual limit is.

The Army manuals are pretty useless for stuff like this, and downright insulting to anybody with more than three firing synapses between their ears. A better source would be GM's tow ratings for the same year, civilian K5, if anything. Even those are steeped in legalese and liability concerns.

How about welding a light duty pintle on the logsplitter?? Or if the current coupler is bolted, then weld this ring to the other side of the coupler and flip it around if it fits that way, so you can reverse it at any time. ?? This is way cheaper than a combo pintle/ball adapter, and prevents unwanted borrowing of the logsplitter too!! :)

If you're good with torches or a plasma cutter, you could bend a piece of 5" wide 3/8" or 1/2" plate to mount behind the current pintle and extend down just far enough to mount a ball and get the coupler on... Or some older raider/monteros had al "L" plate like this bolted to the rear bumper where a pintle mounting plate was already there for mounting a ball... Find one of those... for cheap???

The manual says, as said, the M416A2 trailer. The axle ratio of 3.07 is not really the axle to pull a lot. If you check the catalouges of the K5, allways be aware of the axle ratio mentioned in relation of the gross combination weight. I own catalouges from the early 80th and they even do not mention the Diesel engine. The brake rating is E (fourth didget of the VIN), which means 7000 lbs max weight. So the M416A2 trailer with brakes is the max for the brake rating considering the vehicle gross weight of 6400lbs.

Kip, if you replace the pintle with the pintle ball combo, you just lose the ability to rotate the pintle off road. If you look close, you will find a seller on ebay that sells just that, Valley Mfr for $27 + the ride. I bought a few for my own junk.

I had a real hd pintle/adjustable reese style unit, pulled off the pintle and bolted in the pintle only, worked great and I used the military backing plate to support the hitch.

I was going to add a reciever hitch under the bumper so it would be out of the way when not being used so I could keep the pintle. I would like to restore my M1009 but make it civilian freindly too. But I plan to use it for hunting so I want to keep all the off road capabilities. But what load can the pintle take? You can add helper springs but what can the pintle handle before it breaks? I see it turns. Does that make it weaker?
