Replacing the rear main seal and many questions

I'm getting the truck ready for college and
for when I get my drivers license and, I have
a lot of work I need to do to get this truck ready.


Okay I'm putting a rear main seal in my cucv.
I already have the pan down and the cap
off the rear seal and ripped out of oil one.

Now last time I had attempted to put a
new rear seal in I destroyed it. The lip
of the seal shredded.

I have yet to order a new one.
Dose any one have a special little trick
to replacing it as in pushing it up around
the baring cap?

After I finish that, I was wondering if I should
replace the oil pump with a new one?

If I decide to do that and when I put the pump
on and the seal for the pan and the pan its self.
I was wondering what people here that have worked
on the 6.2 engine for a long time would give
there input if it's safe for me to use synthetic oil.

I was thinking it might be safe because
I'm cleaning out the oil pan. Well I was
given 4 gallons of oil from a good friend.

Any thoughts or ideas for that rear
main seal I will be very happy to hear them.

The thing is I have replaced rear main seals
on jeeps inline 4.0 about 3-4 times and never
had a problem. Maybe a little time getting
the seal up in there.

I've seen some really thin nylon shim things used to protect the seal from the sharp lip on the block. Not sure if one exists premade for the 6.2.

Well the seal came with a shoe
I found a small trick that didn't
help this time but, did every
other time. I like to use a large
straw to help guild it along.

The problem with the 6.2 is I
didn't have the room for the
straw. It was a really tight fit
and it was really hard to get
it in.

Debur the block. Remove the sharp edge. If you don't you will cut the seal. You ain't lived till you break a seal extractor off way up on top of the crank! Fun times!

or live to tell about breaking
a seal extractor.

Is your engine in or out of the truck? Have you looked at the TM 9-2320-289-34 manual, chapter 3-34? It covers the replacement of the seal.

No I didn't take the engine out.
I didn't look at the manual.
I have the old seal out I
just need I tip for the new
one.

I think I got good feedback
already.

I really do need advise for
the oil pump and for the
synthetic oil.

like your advise from you.
Because you have a good
reputation for advise I
would appreciate what
you think about the
synthetic oil and about
a new oil pump.

Any time you remove the the pan it is a good idea replace the oil pump if it has any age on it. Since you do not know the history I would replace it.

As far a synthetic oil in an old diesel, my personal opinion is that it is a waste of money. Rottela or Deco 15w-40 is all I have ever used.

Yeah the thing is I was given 4 gallons of oil...The thing is can I use it and once I use it can I switch back to regular oil?
