Restamping Vin on Data Plate?

I'm going to be redoing the inside of the truck including the dash..... is there any reason why I can't get a new data plate and restamp the vin on it? We build aluminum trailers at work and hand stamp our data plates every day so doing it wouldn't be a problem I just want to make sure it's legal. My data plate is very very faded.

I would not do it until you have you have it tagged. I restored a MV added new plates, when I took it in for inspection it failed because of "new" plates. The good thing was I kept the old plates brought back in with the plates I replaced and it passed. Down side was instead get it done in one day had to take the following day off to bring it back in.

Provided it's the same VIN as before and it matches the frame, it's fine.

What's wrong is when people try to buy data plates for the "VIN" or paperwork. That's illegal.
