Just purchased this truck about 140 miles from home and foolishly attempted to drive it home. The truck Ran well up and down hills until about 60 miles into the trip when the secondary fuel filter gasket spring a major leak. Had to have a tow truck come bring it the rest of the way home. Major bummer! I spent about the last hour and a half searching this forum and the inter-web in general to find out why it's proving to be so difficult to get fuel filter gaskets. I believe it's a multi fuel engine but I'm not certain and I'm really not certain how closely it resembles the M35 series trucks. My other deuce is a 1955 XM215 dumper. I think I have a lot to learn. The truck is pretty complete other than the foam unit is gone and it runs well and shift as well although it does tend to jump out of fifth gear when you back off the throttle. It appears to have low miles based on the wear I'm seeing and the motor has a rebuild tag from 1987. Pictures to come soon. For starters, how different is this from an m35? What should I worry about and what should I revel in?

Some guesses: It should be based on the M35/M44 series. If there is not carburetor, it's most likely a multifuel. Look for a tag on the engine on the passenger's side, about 1/3 of the way back and down low enough that it's hard to read. That should tell you. M44, M45, and M46 are chassis lengths, I think.

The manuals for it should be in the Deuce section, and the parts should be largely interchangeable. There's a parts substitution sticky there, too. I know there's a NAPA number for the gaskets (that I can't remember or find at the moment), but you might want to consider just going for the Jatonka spin ons. Good investment and easy to install.

Unfortunately, the high-gear pop-out sounds like the transfer case. There are a lot of threads on that in the Deuce forum, including one about mine. Worry about that a bit.

Revel in having 2 trucks that aren't thick on the ground but quite cool.

Now perhaps you'll hear from someone who knows what they're talking about.

Sorry about your fuel leak bringing the truck home. Which gasket failed, the one under the bolt head or the one that seals the cannister? I have not found any of the ones under the bolt head, and had to make my own. The other gasket is readily available. I just bought a couple of extras from Erik's Surplus.

Pics soon for sure. Both gaskets failed. I found some numbers to try from NAPA. we shall see. No real time to work on it til Monday at the earliest. Bummer. Thanks so much for the help so far..

The tranfer cased is different on fire trucks with pumps because the PTO for the fire pump runs off the transfer case, not the transmission as a winch would. Transmission has to be in 4th gear and transfer in neutral to run fire pump. Similar to a M49C or a wrecker.

Finally got the correct fuel filter gaskets today and got her running with no leaks. And the siren works! Next up, check the pump gear case and get the electric pto to engage and see how badly the pump packing leaks! The brakes feel like there is no power assist. Prolly need to check out the air pack. Thoughts?
