Section 2.37 OPERATING IN DEEP MUD and "Differential" in M939 series

I just read section 2.37 OPERATING IN DEEP MUD. I was left with a question: is it true that placing the vehicle in 6WD "LOW RANGE", locks in he differentials? Is there, in fact, a differential lock on these trucks?

For my pick-up truck, I have a diff. lock engaged when I select 4WD, which has a very beneficial effect on traction in mud. But what about our 5-tonners?

Do these trucks not have the 6x6 engage/disengage switch? I thought low means lowered gears in the transfercase. I guess I never heard low gear engages the front axle instead of a 6x6 engaging switch or lever.

The 939 series have the switch on the dash similar to the older trucks. But there is also a switch on the transfer case shift linkage, when you shift into low range it engages the front axle. Many people don't like it and disengage it, and use the dash switch only.

Transfer WILL last longer, a lot less chance of breaking it.

On my pick-up truck, the only reason when I use 4WD low, is to pull out stuck forklifts when they are mired in gravel.

On this 5 ton truck, I do not see a need, FOR ME, to use low transfer switch.

Still, on my original question, it is a lot less efficient to be pulling through mud and uneven terrain, if I do not have a differential lock. Right or wrong?

I believe if you have locking diffs it is hard on the tires on-road. With 6 wheels I believe in most situations you should get good traction. Go on youtube and search steelsoldiers rally you can see these vehicles in action off-road.
