Slaving a deuce w/a generator question

Hey guys, I'm looking for a trailer for my 109. I'm looking at either a M200a1 chassis with a M105A2 bed or just a standard M105A2. On the manifest is a military diesel generator. My question to the electrically competant, what is the minimum sized generator I need to buy that has the capability to slave my deuce? I have settled on a military generator because of the 24v and the presence of a slave plug. I really have my eyes on the Onan 3kw MEP-016B as the candidate but not sure if it'll fit the bill.
This generator would also be used to run the comms in the box as well as other accessories like lights. I plan on putting some kind of battery bank in the back as to avoid running my batteries down. However, if I should need to. I would like the option of slaving myself if need be.

Hey Scott, if you're looking for a genny there are a ton coming up at the end of Jan. Without violating the rules it's in Josh's state on that website where I won my MEP-006a:) Just do a search and you'll see what I mean:)

The deuce starter is rated at about 6 to 8 KW and will not be slave started from a generator without fully charged batteries as a "buffer". Or did I misunderstand your question?

I would think any genset with a 24v starting system will work for your jump starting ( slave ) needs.

A buddy of mine in Fla who has several dozen mil vehicles to which there are alway dead batts on his trucks, he uses 2 12v garden tractor ( riding mower ) batts in series hooked to a slave cable to start any of his vehicles, both batts are small enough to fit in a standard size plastic marine batt box. We laugh anytime he bring it out to use it but they've started any vehicle he's hooked them to from jeeps to his wrecker. He's used it a few times to run a vehicle in a parade by setting the batts in the bed and slaving the truck for the duration of event

I think the more suitable question would be what batteries the genset has. If you have a genset with a 4HN I doubt that you are going to be slaving many trucks. on the other hand if it has 2 optimas or 6TLs, it will slave most stuff. Depends on the charging system of the genset as to how long it will take to bring said batteries back up to full charge.

Unless you are talking about the 24volt gen sets?

And shure the two little batt will start a good truck in FL. But if you have a hard starting truck in the cold it aint going to happen.

I bought a genset off a guy here on the forum who was having a rough go at it a couple of years ago. The genset is for 28 volts, every one I have talked to says it is for radio sets or for slaving off 24 volt trucks. Is this true?

PS, I bought the set for $200. I will give some one a super deal on it. I bought it to help the guy out.

As written already, if you are using an AC generator to start a deuce it will depend on what batteries the generator has since its 28 volt charging system is only designed to charge batteries, not to jump start. The gas 10kW and smaller sets with electrc start have either one 24 volt or two small 12 volt batteries. They may not be enough to start a cold deuce. The diesel 5 and 10kW sets have two 6TLs so if they have a good charge they can jump a cold deuce even if the generator is not running.

If you want a dedicated generator to jump start vehicles you need to look for a 28 volt unit.

The three common sizes are 1.5, 3 and 4.2kW. The 1.5 and 3kW gas sets were all pull start although some 3 kW sets were retrofitted with electric start engines. The 4.2kW has a starter/generator but no batteries. It can be pull started or jump started but is incapable of starting itself.

They 1.5kW may not start a deuce with dead batteries but with a few minutes to charge the batteries it will get the job done.

The smallest common diesel 3 kW set is the 3kW electric start set. There are 1.2 kW 28 volt diesel sets and some have been sold out by GL but they don't have a good reputation for reliability.

We have 1.5 and 3kW sets and the 3kW set will start a deuce or M915A1 (400 HP Cummins) with no drama. We haven't tried it on our M813A1 which also has a 230 HP Cummins. I think it would grunt more with the 230 HP engine because it has much higher compression than the 400 HP version of the same engine block.

The 4.2kW set will start any truck in the military and most tracked vehicles. We even used them to start M60 tanks and M88 recovery vehicles with their 750 HP engines.
