Slow vehicle safety

A lot of good ideas in this post. It's even worse in Germany (or was in 90's) with civilians. We were convoying our tracked vehicles from the rail yard to base one night and had an accident. We had 1 Humvee in front with signs and extra lights and a 5 ton rear escort with extra lights. There was about to 30-35 vehicles in the convoy and everything bigger than a M9 ACE or M113 had 2-4 amber warning lights. A German civilian passed most of the convoy and smacked the dozer blade of M728CEV that was right in front of my M88 (I was 3rd to last vehicle). One surviving passenger tried saying they didn't see the convoy. Do the best you can to make yourself more visible and watch out for the idiots.

There are all LED lights on our 109. Be aware in GA you need a permit for any flashing light that is used as a warning light - the cost is $2 per yr.

Yep had those on my surplus delivery vehicle(Old Ambulance/SWAT Truck) Cheap to buy a years worth of safety.

I just got a box full of the VS-17 panels like I mentioned in the first post.

Here is what one looks like attached to the back of an M101A2. They fold up into a pocket made into the panel when not in use, and have parachute cord ties sewn into the corners and edges to easily attach them.

These go a huge way toward increasing visibility- and are still correct military issue!

If nothing else, if you do get hit and it goes to court, one of these is a great Exhibit A "One of these was marking the rear of my vehcile for safety. The are designed to be seen by aircraft thousands of feet in the air traveling at hundreds of miles an hour. Someone traveling on the ground with me, just 15-20mph faster should have no problem seeing it if they are paying the slightest bit of attention."

Rewiring your front park lamps to be on with the headlights on, is also a good idea.

Of course! That said if I sell out before then I think I can get more, but they may end up being more expensive.

I used jeep LED tail lights, a rotator beacon, and I painted a safety yellow and black candy cain on the back of my cucv to make it more visable. If I get stuck driving on a road with a speed limit higher than 55 mph I always use that rotator light.

I have added the dot reflective tape to the back of my vehicle, it is attached to a 2" wide strip of magnetic material so it is removable

Winning is not the problem. We still get rear-ended by morons even though we have big fire apparatus with flashing LED's (They're so bright I can see the reflection off of street signs on a sunny day) and big red and lime yellow reflective chevrons on the back. You still have to watch out for people like that. Sometimes I think that we've already had the zombie invasion, they're just driving cars.

The VS-17 panel is a great (and inexpensive way to go). Tie it on when you need it, fold it up and stuff it in the truck when you don't. The are hard to miss when new, but will fade from the sun if you leave it on all the time.

Folks, in a previous post 2 Function Magnetic LED Amber Safety Light - 2830053 | Tractor Supply Company was discussed. I was able to detour myself over to a TSC yesterday and bought the only one of these they had in stock. While doing a little research work I found these on an auction sight for quite a bit cheaper even with shipping. Buying more than one increased the savings. I added 2 more to my collection. My goal is to have one in each truck and when I do rallys or recoveries, take multiple.

Also just added 4 more Grote LED rear composite lights to my collection. I now have enought to outfit all of my junk with rear LEDs.

Folks, don't know if it's applicable at all Lowes but my local Lowes had the above referenced flashing light on clearance for just under $5.00. They had 3 and I got them all. They also had them with red lenses for $16.95. Just passing on a deal.

I have a red one stuck on the dash of my M109a3. the truck is painted rustoleum flat black. if i have any trouble and have to stop at night i grab the light turn it on and stick it on the back as high as i can reach, open the back and pull my triangle set out and put them out. the best i can do. as far as driving LED taillights and a "GOD Bless America" bumper stuicker.
