Smokey 1009

I just picked up my 1009 today!!Runs good but is very smokey.Also runs a little rough when I first start it.Any ideas???

If you know who Marshall Booth is (may he rest in peace) then you will know that that article is trustworthy.

I used to do this on my MB all the time and it works.

The smoke is a white color and smells very dieselly.It runs like a gas engine would ,If it had a rich fuel mixture.

check your air filter
have your timing checked
presure test your coolant system

is the exhaust white only at start up or is it white all the time?

The smoke is pretty heavy on start up mostly white,But then thins out a bit after the truck warms up.

soudns liek a head gasket, do a coolant presure test.

It's unburned fuel. My suspects would be glow plugs, glow plug controller, and then HPCA (cold advance) solenoid.

Run and drive it until it gets up to temp. Does it ever get to temp? Should be running over 180 d f after a good drive. check thermostat if engine does not get to temp, it will do damage to keep running cold. Check recent thermostat thread. If it only smokes when cold, I agree with hobie237's post above. If still smokey and if you are loosing coolant, than Maretimer has it right.
