That would be a **** of a combination. FWIW: there's a guy in southern Texas that is REWATing the 76mm on his Scorpion. With an approved Form 1 and a good machinist, it's not that tough. But I like the idea of the 20mm, Justin.

76mm

3.3 - Do you have his contact info? I also have a live 76mm in a turret. It may save him some time.

Cannon - give me a call tomorrow. What side of H-town is your shop on?

All this info gives me a lot to think about. It could also cost me a lot of money in the future ;)
Justin, you read my mind on the 20mm. I was wondering if it would be easier to swap a 20mm in to something like that, to make it easier to obtain ammo. At this point this is all just a dream, but less then 2 years ago I would have never thought I would have a yard full of OD trucks either. Looks like I better start saving now.

the retro fitted turbo diesels are even faster!!!:D

i will see if i can find the film from sarejevo of a british cavalry regiment using the RARDEN cannon to ' unzip a sniper ' who was making a nuisance of himself in a church tower-when the dust cleared the top of the tower was gone, there was no sign of the sniper:p
there is definately sense in buying a small english sports tank.MBT,s are lots of hard work.

I have a Czech built T-55a and love it. It is easy to maintain, easy to get parts (as they are the most produced tank in the world and still in widespread use) easy to drive and as for transport, when it gets moved it is usually on a TV or film productions dime. I store it where I can drive it any time I want. I'd recommend one but try to get one out of England. It will make the paperwork easier.

Tanks

Tanks are GREAT! Yes they are work, but if you aren't knocking trees down, or running over cars all the time, they really aren't that bad. You must have access to good friends who love armor though... it really helps on some of the big jobs.

I've had a Scorpion, they are nice, but very small. If you started out wanting a real tank, they will eventually not fit the bill. The T-55 is the best combination of price, parts, and ruggedness...

Don't listen to the rumors on barrels. You do not have to remove barrels. Bore size hole in the high pressure area, and cut breech ring. I have a T-54 on the way in now with approved paperwork from a month ago.

Finally, have a place to run it and store it. You can forget about having a truck and moving it for a weekend fun run. These things are dangerous and moving them magnifies that.

Oh one last thing, I would highly discourage putting a 20mm open bolt cannon into a Scorpion turret... fumes would be one, but the least of my worries. An O gun can be a dangerous beast, and being holed up in a steel turret with one would give me the willies.

Just curious.... If money was no object, where would one go to purchase a tank? Haven't seen any on govliq
You won't see one on Gov-Liq as Uncle Sam doesn't surplus out armor to Civilians. I'd recommend Dave Uhrig: www.armyjeeps.net

ebad (ebay): Military Vehicles | eBay

Khaki Corps: Khaki Corps Imports - Specializing In Importing British Military Vehicles Into the U.S..

Marcus Glenn MARCUS GLENN

There are also several import/exporters of AFVs over in the UK but as of this posting, I can't remember any of their contact details.

If you want an actual "tank" not an APC, SPG or other tracked armor I can only really recomend one that fits in your price range: British FV101 Scorpion tank like in my avitar. They are easily transportable (about 8 tons), reliable, have rubber padded tracks and FAST!

Oh that is sweet! I'm also getting the itch for a tank or APC. What's one of those in operating condition go for?

That greatly depends if you are looking at one already in the US or you are purchasing one in the UK and importing it yourself. I haven't seen one in the US for less than $60,000 for quite some time. Are they out there for less? Perhaps, I just haven't seen one. I'm not current on the prices in the UK any more, try milweb.net for more current prices.

I've been offered T-72's before, at about 58 tons, if memory serves, too hard to move. Buying one is cheap, using one, unless you have hundreds of acres is EXPENSIVE! I had a 25 ton M42A1 Duster and at 10.5' wide it was a pain to move.

A guy who lives down the street from me has 2 T72 tanks paid 15 grand a piece for them
Maybe he won't notice if there is one missing

Guy in Toronto has a Leopard Tank with a training turret. Had it up for sale last year. I believe he was asking $50k. Cool thing about the training turret is that it sits three people inside, plus a driver up front.

Not that ITAR would let it leave the country (if someone in the US wanted to buy it). But was cool non the less.

Inside the USA? Short answer...No. Tanks don't come with titles and so can't be tagged for the road. Most States forbid the driving of tracked vehicles on state maintained road ways. I did know a guy who used to drive his M4A3 Sherman tank in local parades. He'd drive it to the jump off point (1 or 2 miles) & go from there. It did have rubber block tracks which still tore up the asphalt in the summer. I know there are lighter tracked MVs out there but they still don't meet DMV regs for on road operation...
