Some old CUCV pictures I found in my office

I have a whole box of CUCV's I found in my office filing cabinet. I have an office off the master bedroom that I seldom use. I was looking for some of my World War II German items and stumbled across some pictures of CUCV trucks I resurrected from the mid to late 90's. Keep in mind these trucks were only 10-12 years old at the time the pictures were taken. They had been used hard ,treated badly, cannibalized and many had been worked on and painted very poorly. But the good thing was all the parts were available from the local Chevrolet dealer and they were about $800. - $4000. at the time. Circa 1995-1997. Back then front fenders were $95. and doors were $135. That was Genuine GM in the box with lifetime rust thru warranty. I still have the warranty papers. I was turning out 1 truck every 8 weeks. Some faster. All had new tires and completely gone over. These trucks all had less then 30 K miles on them. Rough I know but I had a source for used civilian parts and went wild. Bought dash pads by the dozen at $225. each. Kept edge painted fenders,hoods and doors in stock. GM inner fenders were about $40. each. New hoods for $50-$100.

Died as a noble snow plow truck. I think. That is 1995 back at my barn area. Pictures were taken of the roofs and sides before they were painted to get a few pictures before and after. I remember using the cargo cover for the wood piles and scrapping the bows and cutting them up for welding supplies. Well I didn't know.

I painted both of these CUCV's during the summer of 1995. Both 1984. Left is CAMO M1008A1 and GREEN & BLACK M1028. My Sons are both grown up now. I managed to get stuck at a construction site. I had a cow bell tied to the brush guard. It was an excellent truck. I ran stock tires and Goodyear Workhorse tires. I was only stuck because the one lock out was no in lock. Jr was just learning how to help Dad. The chain is evidence of my recovery by a forklift. Enjoy the pictures. I found a couple hundred. Next pictures I have are CUCV's that are corralled in a field after returning from the Gulf War.

DSCF4578.jpgThis was my Isuzu Trooper Diesel. It was a bullet proof machine. Ran for ever and got 35 MPG. I had the frame replaced under warranty and the body rusted down to dust in about 20 years. It was great 4WD vehicle. I was tempted to CARC the Trooper but I had a buyer on Ebay that exported it to South Africa. Hot item I was told. Still ran perfect just crispy at the edges. Walking around it the rust was not visible it was on the cab mounts. And NOT as bad as I make it sound. But after that I started buying new stuff every 5 years. Oh yes the CARC bike. My oldest Son had a 3 color and my youngest a desert tan. Sold them to some kids at the shore one year.

All the glass was removed and I painted everything like it left the factory 686 Tan CARC. It was a beautiful truck. 21K miles. It was a 1984 M1028. I drove it for a while and sold it because I was offered big money. Very clean and zero rust. It was only 12 years old at the time.

I had all the parts to rebuild it and did not waste anything back them. Except M1010's. I made plow trucks out of them. I met the guy that wrecked this truck. It happened on I81 just inside Virginia going south. The driver suffered a heat stroke. Imagine that. He walked away slightly hurt.

Before I became involved in CUCV's I was involved in many other vehicles. Police cars, Camaro's. And the last big hoard of vehicles I had were Isuzu Diesels. Loved them. They ran forever got 35MPG and never needed any work. The worst part about the whole truck was lack of room for my growing family and RUST. I hate RUST. I changed a few frames and mainly that is where I had the most trouble with RUST the frames. CUCV's are the same thing fighting RUST. But the mechanical issues on a CUCV along with RUST are worse. My opinion from having both over a 10 year period. I love the CUCV's but it is being truthful. The Mark M1010 body in the back ground. Still sits there as a lawn mower shed to this day. Like I said very cool and dependable truck. Started in all temperatures. I was told by an Isuzu representative that I received the last new frame under the warranty program. He said since my truck was a 1981 he would give me the frame but NOT pay the labor to replace it. I was good with that. This one I should have kept. Oh well. Life goes on.

His Wife and him would do reenacting and that is how I met him. He made me up a nice little book on the M1009 and mailed it to me. Very helpful tips he pulled from the PS magazine during the CUCV's prime time in the military. I have book 3 of 12. He numbered them and sent them out to friends. DSCF4656.jpg Have a great day.
