Spedo Cable Replacement

Starting the re-assembly of the truck after restoring all the parts. First up is the wiring (done) and the speedometer cable. I tried for over an hour to align the new spedo cable to the transfer case. If you ever did this you know it is a round end with with a keyway at the transfer. You can't see into the connector so no way to know where the keyway is. Any advice?

I really didnt have a problem with it, i did make that connection first, then route the cable through the frame and then up into the cab.

Got it! Had the wife slowley turn the inner cable from the speedo end while I aligned it. When it matched the keyway, it went right in.

Just for future reference. The Speedometer cable and core for an M-39 or 800 series 5-ton works better than the specified m-37 assembly. It is about 4 inches longer and allows for easier bends.

Restoration is now 99% complete. While the truck was apart we put a NEW speedometer cable in as mentioned earlier in this thread. Last week I drove it out my 1/2 mile lane and the speedometer was still bouncing all over the place. So, put in a NEW speedometer and the same thing. Nothing left to replace. The speedometer cable takes a sharp turn out of the transfer case but so did the original. There is no other way to route it. I'm at a loss.

Is the inner core lubed good? I've had good success lubricating the core with white lithium brake grease on other vehicles with a similar issue.

Problem Found

Tried to take out the core of the new cable to lube it and it won't come out. Decided to take a longer drive and maybe the lube in there will loosen up. I left the cable hang under the dash. I heard it clicking right at the connector as I drove so I lifted it up and the clicking stopped. After a few more experiments with the new speedometer also hanging under the dash we discovered when the connector at the speedometer end was crimped on, it crimped the inner cable which is pinching the core. If I wiggle it just right all is OK and the clicking stops. Probably why I can't pull the core also. So, another "after market" piece of crap to add to the list.
