Starter Failure

Was very lucky. M1009 starter sheared off outer bolt and failed to engage flywheel. The front bracket had come apart from the block and the torque snapped the bolt. Got two new bolts from GM and the block bolt from Home Depot thanks to the information in the sticky. Had it back on in under 30 minutes. Connect the wires first before mounting! Check yours today and torque to specification and ensure the front bracket is attached and secure.

The correct new bolts usually have pre-applied thread locker on them.

If thread locker had been used, I would have had a much harder time removing the broken one. No locker for me; just periodic checking and tightening.

mine just did that today, I hooked the starter back up put the new bolts in and my starter does nothing. In the year that i have had my m1009, this will be the second time i have had starter issues. What am i doing wrong, or not doing.

Had that happen also. Was a real joy to repair last year. Snapped the bolt off in the block. Agree with DH, check when changing oil. My starter just "died" this last Friday. Had another starter shipped in from Chicago. Mounted it this morning. Both were "no shim" starters, the old one had a shim under it. Placed new one on old shim and bendix didn't engage correctly. Added more, took some away, took all away. Still no good. Only conclusion? Starter was not correctly machined. Another will arrive on Tuesday and I will restart the process. Any suggestions?

Pull your cover and measure the gear engagement gap(shim as needed). Pretty sure it's listed in the -20 or -34 TM.

DH, thank you very much. I was suspecting that with and without shims the bendex gear rotation shaft was at an angle to the engine. Not "straight" out and in, hence the truck would start, but the gear wouldn't engage fully. I will pull cover and check.
God bless,
Tony:D
