I am not sure of engine, it has a turbo, the front cover has a tach cable coming out of it. I can get more info tomorrow. we were starting it on a can of starting fluid. it started and died a few times, then it revved out for about 10 to 15 seconds, it still had not picked up fuel. now it has massive valve clearance. I looked in the oil cap and did not see the rocker move when cranking the engine over. I pulled the front cover and valve cover, nothing broken , push rods not bent. what are the lifter like ? is it possible they are collapsed ? thank you for any help

Did you prime it before you tried to start it ?

Possible with the engine selection. Just going off the list of Cummins engines that came in these trucks.

On those 8 or so valves that are no longer moving, are they all on the last few cylinders? Meaning are all the valves after a certain spot no longer moving?

Don't spray ether directly into it.
Doghead you shouldn't say that statement this guy could be new to the hobby and take you seriously because of your years here and post count.

This truck if it's a newer style truck has ether, but it's measured and will not spray if it's above a certain temp.

Well since it is now taboo to tell them to read the manuals , this looks like a expensive lesson in not doing so .
If the motor took off spraying either it's a good bet they sprayed the either wide open just like the motor did.

I don't think it's taboo, it's just the way it's done sometimes.
Personally think the way you have been doing it is great.

How did you spray it? Squirt , then turn over? Spray while cranking? If it's a 5 ton with a turbo does it have an auto transmission? That will help identify what truck it is.

Sounds like (from his 2 posts) it is a 6CTA? His posts do not appear to have been edited.

While I can't possibly add to some of the helpful information provided in some other posts , I'll ask the same as post #7: Which valves (locations)?

This is turning into a game show. I was going to say "I'll take Cummins 250 for $500 please", and guess the unit injectors are stuck in the down position, hence the rocker clearance (like a 2 stroker Detroit Diesel), but when he said tach cable from front cover, it threw a stick in the spokes. I don't know where the tach cable is on a 250 engine, I don't have much experience with them at all, none really.

I will take 8.3 for $300, LOL
The Tach cable on the NHC250 is on the driver side on the PT pump.
