I purchased this 1953 M38A1 Jeep a few years back from a friend in California. It came with a civilian F-134 engine, and lots of small problems. First I got the engine pretty much squared away. The only major item that still needs to be corrected is the fuel pump, and I have a rebuilt one on the way. Got some more pics to come of the work that has been done, and work that still needs to be done. Stay tuned!!

A little more info. Purpose built CUCV. Has been converted to a dually with a cab and chassis rear. Tires are tucked, not sticking out. Has a slide out work bench with a yost vice as well as a tailgate vice. It's been called the NAPA truck at the GA Rally. Completely stocked with GR8 bolts, wiring and connectors, clamps springs and a hundred other items. Trying to obtain a Miller Bobcat for the back. The SECM body was originally on a Dodge M887 before the gov't repurposed it. Just an old workhorse. Oh, it has a Muncie SM465 4 speed in it now but the NV4500 5 speed is going in soon.

When I purchased this Jeep I discovered that the engine was a commercial F-134. There was no oil filter, so I added one, the carburetor was a Carter YF, I installed the correct Carter YS950S, I installed the correct top valve cover for the Carter YS950S, there was no engine breather, I installed the correct one, I installed the fording valve and new intake lines, I removed the fuel tank and cleaned it out and installed a new fuel tank fuel filter, and then cleaned out all the crud under it, and then primed and painted. I installed all new fuel lines from the fuel tank to the fuel pump, and have a new fuel tank vent line ready to install. I purchased a correct rebuilt AC Double Action Fuel Pump to replace the commercial fuel pump. On the inside I installed new data plates for the On & Off switch and the Fording Valve handle. After all this it starts and runs good. But there is still more to do.

Picture 1, is where a previous owner removed the tub for the slave plug for some reason that borders on insanity. You can see the outline. I picked up two tubs at one of the MVCC gatherings at Petaluma. Now I just need to find a quality body and fender man. He also removed the holder for the ax, if they wanted a CJ-5 they should have bought a CJ-5. The tool box lid didn't have a latch, and rattled around when driving. I found a nice tool box lid from the same seller at Petaluma, now it's quiet. The Jeep came with zero tire tools, so I purchased some off e-bay, and I should now be able to do a tire change when out in the toolees. Also there are buckets cut into the rear fender wells left & right. When I picked up the Jeep they were loose and just rattled around. The holes were there so I installed four screws in each to keep them quiet, and the wooden lids came with them. This was a red FD Jeep at one time or another, and wonder if these buckets were installed by them. Almost forgot, the opening in the hood for the fording device was welded shut. There is red paint over the weld so the FD may have done this crude work as well as the rest. The hood has bondo in the front so I'll be looking for an original hood in the future anyways. Any ideas on what the square cans are for, let me know.

DSCF2808.JPG DSCF2807.JPG A neighbor down the street stopped by, and mentioned he had worked on Jeeps forever and a day. I mentioned my M38A1 had a shake at about 40mph. He said he had a couple of new tie rod ends that he would donate. So he came back about a half hour later and gave me these two boxes. He said he couldn't remember what model or year Jeep they were for but I could have them. I googled and e-bayed the NSN 2530-735-1411 Kit Repair that is on the box, and have come up with zero. Any help here would be appreciated. I'll open one of the boxes and post a pic to see if maybe we can get a visual ID...........thanks.

DSCF2809.JPGDSCF2810.JPGDSCF2811.JPG Opening this box was like opening something out of a Pharaohs Tomb. 1st pic it smells like something that's a 100 years old. 2nd pic are 5 envelopes. 3rd pic all the envelopes are open. The 3 cotter keys are out of the little envelope, the rest appear to be tie rod ends. Any ideas. There were no part numbers on any of the envelopes or parts that I can see.

This FSN: 2530-735-1411 was assigned on 01-01-1963.
Part of your problem when looking for info is maybe that you entered that FSN. In the 70's we went the NSN. So if you insert two zeros, NSN: 2530-00-735-1411, you start to get more info.

That NSN is discontinued, and there were a number of sub NSN's.

The original FSN had the part number of, (and I don't know what was on the box, might be different) of 00640178. In any case, there were other part numbers:

Guy, thanks for all the hard work on this!!! Is there any way we can find out what model of Jeep this repair kit is for? I think 1963 was toward the end of M38A1 production. Then there is the MB, GPW, and M38 Jeeps that this kit could be for. I will get the trusty camera out and crawl under the jeep and get a couple pics of the tie rod ends.

I put the NSN 2530-00-735-1411 into ebay. The above info was written there. Plug it in and take a look see. This guy has a bunch of kits for sale, and he says they fit the above listed trucks.

Do you have an army parts TM for an M38?
