steering bump ?

I have a 1967 deuce m35a2 the steering wheel has a bump when turning kinda like a detent it seems like its in quarters during a full rotation of the wheel ?
the truck does not wonder and the TP is 50.

The fact that it is repeated and related to wheel position means that your investigation should start at the "top" end of the steering system. That is, the shaft and the worm inside the box.

The way to identify this for sure (or at least the easiest and first attempt at such) would be to release the drag link between the pitman arm and the steering arm. If you can still feel the binding, you can nail it down to the steering gear/column assembly. It's a whole unit and a bear to remove, so you'll probably want to search for any cheats to get access to it in place.

Chances are since it occurs every turn of the wheel that it is either a top bearing in the column, or the steering gear itself. Disconnecting the drag link is one way of isolating the steering gear from the linkage.

Once you have eliminated the steering box, jack the front end up and have an assistant (soldier B) turn the wheel and listen for a clunk, or some indication of a flat spot on a corner of the front end or in the drag link itself.


Short story: I had a squeak in the steering in my civvy Suburban, and it nearly drove me crazy. I suspected a bearing in the upper column, and then the thing started to bind occasionally which is very dangerous. I finally found a dry bearing in the lower column. I guess the moral to my story is that this is not something to ignore. I should have gotten right after my problem right away. It is a potential accident cause and needs to be diagnosed immediately. If you jack the truck's front axle up, you ought to be able to determine where the problem is before taking anything apart.

This sounds like a bad ball bearing inside the steering box to me. If you disconnect the load during your investigation, the bump may go away, making you think it is not coming from the box. I would recommend having someone turn the wheel while you place your hand on the steering box and see if you can feel the bump. Another method would be to use a listening stick, which is nothing but a piece of wood, such as a broom handle. Place one end firmly against the steering box and the other against your ear while someone turns the wheel. Good luck.

You can simply put a listening stick against uyour skull near your ear. It actually works better than way than against your ear itself.

My 68 Deuce has a bump when turning the wheel hard when parked. I do not notice it when rolling but only when parked. I will try some of these suggestions.

You guys should PM Stretch to see if he has any pics of his. His steering box went bad at Haspin this year. It was ugly in there!

well its up in the air and the wheel turns both ways with no bump at all its very smooth

any ideas everything looks ok i'm doing the grease fittings now ,

anyone know why there is a grease fitting type hole on the boot area but there looks like there has never been a zerk its same on both sides

Don't think I took any pics of the carnage inside. Mine was a broken roller. It would lock up when turned one direction, and when freed up it had a LOT of play in the steering. As in unsafe to drive.


I'd also check the steering box for a bent shaft, mine was tweaked some and caused a little of the stiffness.

I have no play in the steering after i jacked up the truck its smooth how my tie-rod end it very loose
If a tie-rod ir not greased would it have as much slack as seen in the video ?

is there a good way to check the gear box grease ?

That tie rod end isn't bad........its SHOT........check the other side also for play.
And in your video when you spin the steering wheel....it looks like it wobbles when you spin it. Is something bent there or is it in the wheel itself?
Otherwise.....nice truck.....

thanks for the wheel spotting i think the wheel is bent and its cracked i think this truck did a lot of off road driving
the other tie rod it tight
this truck was in El Salvador till 08 as papers i found i side lead me to
