suitable battery replacement for M1088

all,

been working through issues with my M1088 and its time for batteries. ive been using just some group 31type batteries suffed in the space and strapped in.

what options have poeple been using for batteries on these? 6TL or equiv is what it takes, but in my 923 5 ton i have used 2 group 4D large instead of 4 6TLs...

ideas or just suck it up and get the 6TL?

The pair of group 31’s should be just fine... 4ea 6tl’s was gross mil-spec overkill. I am using a pair of 31’s for the service batts also and don't plan on changing...

Not a M1088 but I just use group 24 battries in my truck... Heck I went to the interstate place and got blems for 29.99 each. I have yet to have an issue. Also all of my vehicles, daily drive and all run blems. Have 5 years on my daily drive's blem

thanks for the input ronmar, how did you orient your batteries in the tray? seems the factory tray may need to be replaced/modified?

Exide group 31s will give you the best warranty of 2yrs for an 80$ battery. My mack dealer has em cheap.

Cummins dealer is about the same price as auto stores but have an 18mo warranty. Auto store ones have 1yr warranties.

Optimas are pricey but last the longest.

I have 2 H8 Everstart Platinum AGM batteries in my M915. These are what you typically find in the back of a Mercedes or BMW.

If you can fit them in they are a good deal. 5 year replacement and 7 year prorated for $138 each a year ago.

Interstate and the local DEKA dealers in my area always have 31S in 2nds and blems from 50 to 75 dollars ive been using for years in all my stuff with good luck so far.

I took my factory tray out. Mine are in line front to rear in the box and strapped down To fit between the rectangle depressions in the top cover. This is temporary as I will ultimately fit my house batteries in the box along with the service batteries but the top will have to be modified for that.

I believe group 24’s and maybe group 27’s will fit in the original batt locations...

This truck is doing great, air pressure it at 110 after 5 days, and fires right up...

thanks for all the assistance... we will be putting this under our M373 maint trailer this weekend. We bought a new set of OEM landing legs to increase the leg drop to allow the trailer to rest on the legs without blocking...

You need the flat blocks to go under the feet. Trailer legs can collapse and sink in even slightly wet conditions.

Most military trailers had 1inch thick 24in x 24in blocks hooked to chains for easier storage in the trailer racks

were on very fertile farm of over 200 years so anything even remotly heavy gets the landing pad treatment. in the case of semi trailers we have pads of 4 2x12x24 that make a solid pad of 24x24 under each leg like a #. been there done that..

It's always been 12 months on these as far as I've seen. I have a few going on 5 years strong but I assume it's dependent on the truck they're in.

I went to the store in Everett WA 3 months ago and got one. They are a distributor. There are dealers and distributors. You need a distributor and not a dealer i believe. Maybe it's just the one I use.

Also to add they interstate sometimes will have 6TL blems. But I find the group 24 easier to use. NDT said something like to send all the 6TLs to unfriendly countries .

Also for those people buying batteries for trucks that may not see alot of usage. I recommend a deep cycle or a dual purpose battery over a standard battery. This being that the truck is going to kill the battery at some point naturally due to standard draw from the truck. Deep cycle and dual purpose units are designed to he recharged from dead many many times. Unlike a typical battery that may not come back at all.


Regular deep cycle batteries have more Reserve power than a normal battery but will have lets amps for cranking. So i recommend a dual purpose one.

Batteries plus bulbs have some dual purpose AGM dual purpose in group 31 for $265 with a 48month warranty.

Depends on the trucks environment really on needing 2 or 4. Anywhere north of the mason Dixon I would recommend 4, especially if you don't have a solargizer or maintainer on the truck and it's going to sit more than others during the winter.

It also depends on the extra loads you have on the system. Like AC, lighting.
