DOH! just saw you have an A3. I know on the A2 the tach is cable-driven via adapter on the front of the engine, so either the drive adapter, cable, or tach would be broken or disconnected on an A2, don't know about an A3 though.

The A3 uses a magnetic pickup that is located in the bellhousing. Sometimes they get dirty but they are adjustable in and out for a specified gap to the flywheel.

I took the tac out of dash and found that its not cable driven , its electronic . I did find a ground that was loose and fixed that but the tac and the hour meter on it still don't work .

Pull the sensor from the flywheel housing, clean the end with a rag, no need to use a liquid cleaner. Make sure the potting material is not loose and the magnet is in the end of the sensor. Re install until it GENTLY touhes the ring gear, back it off 1/2 turn and LIGHTLY lock the nut down, IIRC 5-8 in lb...remember the pick up is thin aluminum.
