Tail Light Wiring Conversion/Problem...

Can anyone help me figure this out. I replaced my old and shotty "POS" forward Wiring Harness with a new one. During the replacement, I found that the the previous, and well thrashed harness had splices in it from kingdom come... Anyways, after I installed the new harness I found a problem with turn/brake signal wiring for the tail. According to TM 9-8022 manual that a fellow SS member (THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH) had graciously sent to me at no charge, showed that the original design was the following:

Left Taillight: Service Stop, Service Tail, Blackout Tail Light
Wire # 24 - Blackout Tail
Wire # 22 - Service Stop
Wire # 21 - Service Tail

Right Taillight: Blackout Tail, Blackout Stop
Wire # 23 - Blackout Stop
Wire # 24 - Blackout Tail

The rear tail lights have been changed out by the previous owners to a Gama Goat Style as seen on Saturn Surplus.

Anyways, this is what I would like to do, but am just have a major brain fart in figuring out how to rewire this for proper operation.

Both Taillights: Service Stop, Service Tail (Including Turn) If at all possible, would like to retain Blackout Stop (Possibly use Service Stop for this Function) and Blackout Tail.

At the very minimum, I need to have Service Stop (including turn and hazard function) and Service Tail operational. I'm in the process of preparing to obtain a California Commercial Class B License in which I will need to bring this truck down for the driving test and that's one of the Pre-Trip inspections that I need to do.

BTW, on a side note, Is there any problems with DOT or CHP in regards to leaving it the way that it is and explain to the Officer and/or DMV that this is the way the vehicle was designed and a keep a copy of the wiring diagram with me as proof?

You thoughts and help would be awesome!

Also, anyone here local to Orange County, California have a Class B or Class A License? I've been asking everyone that I know to see if anyone has one. When I get ready to do the driving test (Probably Fullerton, CA DMV.) I'll need someone to accompany me or otherwise look forward to getting a ticket for driving a vehicle without the proper license. Gotta love the catch 22. Going to a trucking school and paying $3,500.00 to get the license is completly out of the question. Driving a Deuce is like driving a big pickup truck.

Thanks again fellas!

The conversion to two taillights was covered by a kit.. Instructions probably available from Portrayal Press.. I remember and article in MVPA mag many years ago covering M37.. It does require an extra wire front to rear to separate the brake lights, for directional function...and addition of a separate blackout stop...

Your just missing some jumpers... THe harness you have is probably built to an older spec number, not a biggie.

21 and 22 to the RH light tie into the harness via splice jumpers from the lines feeding the trailer receptacle which should be in your old harness.

The only thing you don't have going to the rear from the front is the wire to the right brake light/turn signal. It isn't on your truck. You can do like DM suggested in the above post and you will have everything except blinkers for the right rear. Run another wire from the firewall back and you can make it work. But, you probably have Douglas fittings for your wire connectors too. (Metal shells that twist to take apart)

To make blinkers, you need a blinker arm, a solid state flasher unit and the wiring harness that connects them to the 3 lever switch. (Sets are going in the $100-$150 price range currently) These components also use the Packard Fittings (Rubber male/female ends that plug together.)

Your front marker lights probably have no wires for blinkers on either side as well. That is a lot of wiring you are going to hack in.

I would suggest you buy a new M35A2 wiring harness front and rear along with a blinker arm and flasher. The rear harness will have the stuff for the diesel fuel pump on the tank, but everything else in the back will actually plug right into the 4 wire composite lights you have on the truck now.

The new front harness will not have a wire for your ignition/distributor. But, it will have a wire that goes to the flame heater used on diesels that can be used for your ignition wire. The alternator on the A2's is on the passenger side while your Gasser has a generator on the drivers side. Other than that, not much will be different.

I also have a 1952 REO and will be doing just as I described above once I get the frame painted and body work done. By the way, here is a list of all military wire numbers.
