Great idea for around town and short trips, good idea to keep the screw clamp too. If you are carrying a load or going on a long trip the screw clamp will keep the sides from splaying out.

My dropside has regular tailgate hooks on it. I keep a pair of tee bolts in the tooll box for loads.

That was an interesting idea, when we did short trips we just put a pad lock in there to keep it secure.
