The Droop Screw is missing ...

... but that's not my real problem. See this thread for the whole, longstory.
http://www.steelsoldiers.com/deuce/40083-governor-holding-engine-back.html

In short I've been having trouble with BAD performance on my deuce. First I downloaded the troubleshooting manual for the LDS-465-1 (my engine is an LD-465-1) and read up on the troubles.

I did all the logical things, inspected the tank (exceptionally clean), blew out the lines, put on all new filters, added an in-line pump (can't afford a new in-tank pump right now), but the bad performance continued.

I bypassed the FDC; CAUTION: some of the instructions in the magazine article cited by this website don't work well, but that's another thread to come.

I took the top off the governor to attempt to adjust the “droop screw” and found it is not there. Fearing that it was lying in the bottom of the governor, we took it off, but it is gone. It seems to be nothing more than a 1” set screw, so that isn’t a problem to replace.

BUT, I broke the other adjusting bolt by not holding a wrench on the inside nut. I didn’t have a thin one and didn’t want to hang it up long enough to grind one down because that would be tomorrow, BAD MOVE on my part!

Can any one supply me with a replacement? See the attached photo. I am going to jury-rig an adjuster with a 3” threaded rod, but it won’t have a very good oil seal.

Any help would be appreciated.

One remaining question, can anyone tell me how to adjust 3 things, the instructions in the troubleshooting manual or TM 9-2910-226-34 (PUMP, FUEL METERING AND DISTRIBUTING ASSEMBLY) don’t entirely match the unit I have. Also, I don’t have a manifold pressure guage. Can anyone tell me how do you adjust these without special tools:
1) Smoke Limit Cam
2) Stop plate adjustment screw (the one I broke)
3) Droop screw

The bypass instructions may get confusing because of the reuse of existing tubes and fittings. I like to show it as seen in the image below by using plugs on the FDC and simply run the fuel feed to "B" in image #2.

I have been taking parts from my spare pumps and FDCs and am down to my last spare FDC, but if you can't find the broken screw anywhere else, send me a PM...

Yes I can help you but we are looking at a demotion in rank for that BAD move you made.

Your pump probely does not use the droop and it could have been removed by soldier x. We will set low side using smoke cam.

Oh, this happened to me once. Not a good feeling especially during a recovery! Green Gem came through for me. Matt sent me a new metering assembly for a few bucks plus shipping.

I have a ground down 1/2" wrench just for this application.

I'd like to learn more about this "smoke cam" adjustment.

The problem with using an old tube and bending it around to fit both sides of the FDC is that a 44 year old piece of plastic tubing is very brittle. Mine broke about the time it was at 180 degrees of bend. Even if I had managed to make it all the way to 270 degrees, it would have been fragile and could possible break later.

Also, moving the tube that goes from the fuel filter to the FDC over to the pump doesn't work because it is 6" too short. You have to buy 36” of new tubing.

Another problem is removing that little elbow from the FDC and putting it on the return line on the front of the IP; the elbow is hard to get to and putting a wrench on it distorts it so that you can't reuse it and YOU CAN'T FIND A REPLACEMENT! The only elbows I could find at 10 different stores in Denver had the male tube fitting instead of female. I wound up putting one of those on, cutting the Ferrel off of the return line from the injectors and putting a matching fitting on.

The best thing to do is put 2 plugs on the FDC and one on the return opposite the return line from the injectors.

About the broken part, please don't put yourself out, though I appreciate the offer. It is fairly easy to rig up a good replacement with a bolt and press-fitting the bracket onto it; I just won't have a good oil seal. That part is quite a ways from the oil anyway and I think the worst thing will be that it will always weep.

I'll find out in the next day or 2 if it works. I have child care duties to perform tomorrow with 3 grand kids, so I won't be able to work on it. Taking them with me doesn't work because the 8 yr. old girl gets bored, the 3 yr. old boy loves it and is actually helpful, and I can't keep track of the 2 yr. old girl. For only having 14" legs, she is fast! The last time I had her around any truck work, I lost her for 30 seconds and found her splashing in a bucket of antifreeze.

By the way, has anyone noticed that the blackout shades on the truck in my avatar would make a good commercial for bars on a cell phone?
