Thoughts on Injection pump rebuilders or remanufactures?

I tried calling Badger Fuel systems in Wisconsin and the guy was rather rude and said he had no time for 6.5 injection pumps. I did talk to Diesel Care and Performance out of Tennessee and wound up with a DB2381-5209 for $400 remanufactured with 1 year warranty. Has anyone purchased one from them for there HMMWV?

Diesel Care & Performance in TN was recommended to me by Rob R. He owns several HMMWV as well as sells parts from time to time. I trust his judgement. I contacted them about a DB2831-5149 for 6.5l NA M1025A2 but, have decided to attempt to replace the throttle valve O rings myself, which brings me to my current quandry.

I have zero first hand knowledge, but I've seen Diesel Care peformance gets bashed hard on the Hmmwv DIY facebook group, including comments from Michael Vaden (black dog customs guy). Stories of people getting multiple failed pumps and other poor experiences. I assume this is the same company, but not sure. Again, this is all second hand internet stuff, but I would definitely do some research before pulling the trigger on a $400 rebuild. That sounds really cheap and when it sounds too good to be true......

Michael is a pretty active member on that group and seems to contribute a lot. Black dog customs isn't in competition with a this company or anyone who rebuilds pumps, so this isn't like chevy talking bad about ford's aluminum pickup beds. For whatever reason, he's not a fan. Again, I've never had a bump rebuilt by these guys, but the name threw red flags based on what I've read. At least enough to warrent a deeper look before buying a pump being sold at half price compared to other vendors in the market.

Diesel care is a bunch of fools who sell parts from warehouses they dont stock anything. I wouldn't trust them to put diesel in my truck. They also change locations about every year cause they can't pay the leases.

You can try Taylor diesel in Memphis. Ask for Derek they do all my pumps as well as those for Memphis equipment.

DCP is the worst company even since the people who knew wtf they were doing left the company, now everything they sell is absolute junk, I only Buy rebuilds now from distributor….I do a pump per week, some times several pumps per week. I have a stack of rebuilt DCP pumps that run like crap…fresh from rebuild.

Feels to me like the injection pump is the common, expensive, major component that requires replacement in reviving a hmmwv that's been in storage for a long time. I don't know if they're just the weakest link? Or maybe just the most expensive part that suffers the most from sitting without use.

It would be amazing if there were cheap new pumps out there, but those days are gone.

It takes specialized equipment and knowledge to correctly rebuild them. Anyone who has the equipment and skill to do the rebuild properly, certainly knows what the going rate for their profession is and it's not $400.

If you're buying a 'rebuilt' pump from anyone for $400, you're being misled that it was 'rebuilt' , or buying from an idiot as a truly rebuilt pump is worth 2x or 3x $400.

When I've had pumps rebuilt by a qualified shop with the proper skill/knowledge/test stand it was $800-$1100. Wasn't the best experience and I don't have anyone to recommend.

If RWH says 'I get my pumps from x' that would be my next source, no questions asked. But that probably would just drive up demand and prices, decreases availability for RWH, so I won't be holding my breath.

The 6.5 injection pump from a regular na Chevy truck has the same guts as a humvee. Throttle linkage and 24v stop solenoid is one of the main differences. You can get rebuilt Chevy 6.5 pumps all day long for $400. I think when you add humvee to the name it raises it 500 dollars. Just my thought.

I just did a quick web search on mechanical 6.5 pumps (not hmmwv) and the only vendor that popped up with $400 for a rebuild is the DCP pump that you are considering. I'm not saying there aren't quality rebuilds out there at that price, but I'd run away from DCP based on what I've seen. In my experience, the low price vendor is usually not the right choice, especially on something that is a skilled/specialized service. You can save $ and get lucky sometimes with lowball vendors, but I find that it typically comes with screw ups and problems more often than not. With the cheap vendor you might get lucky and save $ or you might have to buy and install multiple pumps before you get a good one. I'm happy to pay a premium on something like an injection pump and buy from a respected vendor to increase my odds of not having to screw with bad pumps. I personally don't have time for that crap.

Pensacola diesel was the pump shop for years with the DB2s. This was back pre 2010 though.

Because of the issues finding a rebuilder, I purchased a new DB2 for my new p400 going into my Hummer H1.
