Trans Drain plug removal

Installing the PTO on our duece and went to drain the transmission and this is what I found. Seems like somebody else tried to get the plug out and striped out inside and then used a chisel on it. So I welded a bolt in it and turned right out, still was tight but at least came out. Ive used this trick on other equipment for years, even broke off bolts. Just thought somebody else might be able to use the idea. The combination of a good turning surface and heat usually works great. Pics aren't that great, taken with cell phone.

Good idea, where did you find a replacement plug? (I have one that's a bit rounded)

A regular plumbing-type pipe thread plug of the correct size from a hardware store will work. If you use a brass plug, it will be easier to remove at the next oil change. Just don't reef down on the plug and strip it.

It is also acceptable to use pipe thread tape on a drain plug.

oh yeah a little teflon tape on a new plug will help come out next time and help seal as well. These things dont really need to be that tight. Snug is good.
