Put it in gear and spin it. If the rear turns farther than the front, its OD. There is a way to count the teeth, but I don't know that way.

the simple way is to compare the maindrive gear (the first gear at the front) with the next gear to it. If the maindrive (the first gear at the front) is larger than the second gear from the front, it is an overdrive. Or, you can count teeth. Overdrive maindrive will have 29 teeth, straight (direct) drive will have 22 teeth. the picture looks like a straight drive to me

This is in fact a Spicer 3052 tranny (5th direct). Count the teeth, you will find the numbers shown below...
For some reason the 4th/5th syncro hub is missing the cage with the brass rings.

Pics of my gasser 3052 direct drive 5th. The 3053 OD tranny is identical, except 3052 4th gear now becomes 3053 5th gear: the 4th gear underdrive set is replaced with an overdrive set and the shifter pattern changes (4 & 5 flipped). Old 3052 5th gear (direct drive) is now 4th gear @ 1:1 for the 3053.

This is why the mainshaft and most of the parts interchange. Smart on the militaries part actualy, but I hear the gap from 3rd to 4th is not as good on the 3053.

TM are in the refernce section if you haven't found them already. It has the power map through each gear for both the 3052 and the 3053.
