They don't teach that in engineering school! In fact, they teach you that, "The simplest solution seldom is..." (a professor of mine said that).Plan for the worse, but always, always check for the simplest solutions first!
There's a term for your solution: "Occam's razor (or Ockham's razor) - if there exists multiple explanations for something, the simpler one is usually better. Another way of saying it is that the more assumptions you have to make, the more unlikely an explanation is.
