Thanks all for the kudos.
With my engine trouble light on and glow plug light blinking I thought to get so eone involved with experience with the vw diagnostic software. I had wired the obd2 port , checked the connections again but was nervous that in case I messed up his laptop and adapter cable could be damaged. So I tried with a bluetooth and elm327 just to see if the magic smoke would stay in. To my surprise my elm327 and torque pro software communicated with this 1998 tdi ahu motor. Connection was slow but it gave error code and description for vw.. quite a list that did not make complete sense, like a simple straightforward coolant temp sensor.
Torque have an option of ECU reset and amazingly it worked, no new codes found, no blinking glow plug light and no cel light.. I have to admit that I was pretty happy. Started engine several times but nothing showed up. This is very good because I was a bit nervous driving with codes for a certain distance without me knowing what was going on or if I would damage this engine. Another nice benefit was that some simple engine parameters like rpm and engine coolant temp are visible with the torque app.. the communication was slow so the rpm readout was not very responsive. I did not experiment with Improving the communication speed.

Before I could move the 404 camper I had to make space. So the 404 truck had to move. It has been sitting for 1-2 years and I wanted to top up the batteries. Mouse nest. After charging and getting the Gasoline pulse pump to work again i had a good crank but no start. So checked am sparkplugs, spark was good , cleaned plugs, no start.

Then checked the gas level in the carburetor with my sight glass thingy..level looked good , no start. It seemed to fire up but it did not come to life.. couple of hours later, it did?? No clue.
Brakes were good so of we went

With a parking spot freed up Tanya and I decided the bring the 404 camper up. We drove with her 300td wagon to the barn and she would follow me back home to make up for no lights and pieces that would fall of.

We started out good but after 500 yards suddely a lot of smoke came of the turbo. we stopped and it turned out that I had not tightened the oilfeed line. Ok not bad.
We moved on to a Sheetz a mile further where Tanya informed me that a large ring fell of the 404. I could not imagine what so we pressed on.. well a mile further some steam came from the coolant tank and a minute later hot water made it out overflow. Obviously we stopped and you guessed it already we lost the serpentine belt and so no water pump or alternator.

Tanya stayed with the mog and I drove back withe the 300td and indeed the belt was on the road. Back to the mog and then I noticed that my whole idler pulley was missing. We both drove back again and after 1/2 an hour along the side of the road Tanya found the pulley and bolt 20 ft to the side in the grass.. lucky lucky.

Reinstalled belt and pulley. A local vet hospital gave us 1/2 gallon of water and we were on our way and made it home safely.

Here is a link to a very poor video since driving and changing gears in a 404 and holding a phone is a bit difficult.

Note, this is with open exhaust, no muffler,no intercooler,,about 8 psi of boost. We pull here out of a Sheetz gas station, so without me knowing it we have no coolant circulation. Starting in 3 gear and there is a lot of whine in 5 gear, oil level is good, so I don't know.. and oh yeah, the steering nut is missing but it did not cause more complications.

Thanks you Truktor ( benzworld) for posting a pic of a unimog 404 camper model from the swiss site...www.unimog.ch

Did some searching on that site and then found it myself. First I thought it was only a imaginary model. Some Google fu showed another image.

Passion camping cars magazine issue 54
Wheel Tire Automotive parking light Vehicle Motor vehicle

Here I thought I was the only one with a crazy idea.. not sure if it is actual a French made camper.. looks about as top heavy as my project.

Thanks Truktor for the light.
