Sorry folks about the outage. We're in the process of upgrading the site and had an issue with the database last night. We were not hacked. Just human error.

Hooray! The site is back! It went down right as I was posting a reply, and then I found out it was back up mere seconds ago when I got a subscribed thread email. I was already going through withdrawal 15 minutes into the outage.

Hey, is there some other forum or twitter hashtag or something that we can agree to congregate at for mutual support during Steel Soldiers site outages?

I must have the worlds Best or worst timing...you can look at it anyway you want to. From the posts it looks like the site went down last night around 2300...I had just logged off shortly before that.

Today I logged in about 2 or 3 minutes after the site came back up

Boy was I confused when I logged in and only saw 14 new posts in over 17 hours of absence :doghead:

Steel Soldiers on FB is where its at. No one ever post on there though, unless there is an outage.

PA you do horrible work. Every time you do an upgrade there are problems.....

Nah Just kidding. Since you have started working on it things have been great. With out you we would be left with DH, and we all know how great he is....:doghead:

Gack! FB! I dread FB. I was active there for a while, but got fed up with their repeated privacy rule changes and nuked my account. Later some friends brow-beat me into signing up again, so I did so under a fake name and have about 2-3 friends there. And I almost never actually log in.

You kids git off mah lawn!

The truth of the matter is, we had to shut down the site to get caught up on all of the "report post" reports. Too many people are reporting too much BS and we had to shut it down to catch up. If the frivolous reports continue, so will the outages!

To clue the members in on what magic is going on behind the scenes. We're using a database copy to uplift it as a test to vBulletin V4. We're also working on a major redesign of the site (graphically).

After that is squared away, we're going to start evaluating hosting the site on virtual servers to allow for redundancy.

EDIT: I just read my post, that probably sounds like Chinese to some of you. So let me try to explain it. We'll have "snapshots" of the complete server running on a session (think of it as a electronic computer running inside a computer). So basically the server runs as a server inside a server. If there's an issue with the server inside, we can switch over to another "snapshot" and carry on. Some of you might use "system restore" in windows. Well what that's doing is reverting the hard drive of your computer to a "snapshot" taken back in time previously. The idea of virtual servers works along the same lines, except working in real time.

If it would be ok with everyone, I'd like to consider offering a remotely hosted chatroom link for the main page when the site is down. No, it's far from perfect I know. But perhaps it would allow everyone to meet up still. (Just thinking out loud here)

That would be great! If it's non-Flash-based (so I could sign in from my iPad), that would be even better!

I'm fine with Java. Only problem is, there's so many flavors out there and conflicts. The chatroom I have in mind is java based however. Not perfect for some users, but good for emergency use.

Maybe not so strange. We run VCenter and it cool to see issues pop up and the software spins up a new server and the process continues or it gets moved to new hardware automagically. Snapshots are taken for the same reason SS is done.

Tough to bring our servers down but boy let a network switch generate a broadcast storm and watch everything crater down around itself.

Good job recovering. I didn't miss it. I saw it was down and I went to the barn to do more wiring and added 24 outlets.

:)
