Upgrading the dog bones

I take my Deuce offroad and do it pretty seriously. On my last trip out, I managed to blow out all of rubber joints. Luckily, none of them came apart, the link either slid towards the brackets or just chunks of rubber are missing. I have been trying to brainstorm a way to upgrade the links to be more flexible. I'm not trying to spread the axles apart or anything like that. My initial thought is to have some 3/8" or 1/2" thick steel brackets made and welded together. That way I can use large heim joints in double shear instead of the factory style rubber joints. Thoughts?
