valve rotator info needed

I'm on my way into town to talk to some engine machinists but I'm wondering if any of you guys have pulled the valves and noticed the spring inside of the valve rotators broke. Several of the rotators came right apart while others have stayed crimped together. They all rotate freely but I can't figure out what the springs even do, or if I need to get new ones or what.

Thanks again,
Marc

I don't think they are supposed to come apart. I know the ones we use at work on the gaseous fueled engines are non repairable and do not come apart.
