Voltage regulator problem..?

I noticed the voltage in a 109 was in the green for 5-600 miles then after a while it started to go up into the red. Either the gage is bad or in my opinion I need to change the voltage regulator. I will start with the voltage regulator.

Does anyone know where I can get 2 of them and where is this located. A picture is worth a thousand words.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have not been able to find parts or anyone wanting to tackle repairing one. Apparently CME in Fl is the only place with parts but they want to sell rebuilt units. The next time I need one I am going to convert to a madern alternator. There are several theads about that and sources for alternaters.

Erik's Military Surplus has regulators for about $63 bucks. Confirm your alternator is one of the numbers listed as a compatible. Super easy to change.

Just remove the screws on the rear cover, pull it off. disconnect the 3 or 4 wires and replace them on the new one. They are numbered and so are the terminals on the regulator.

I lubed the oring to ease installation.

If you have a screwdriver and one hand and one eye, you can do it.

Yes, the regulator is by far the easiest repair. Also, keep in mind the large resistor on the regulator is prone to failure and 5 out of 10 regulator failures can be repaired simply by replacing the resistor. You can spot the failure if the carbon pile is pushed out of the resistor. Easy parcheesi.

For a total overhaul, keep an eye on ePay for parts. I was able to do a total rebuild (brushes, holders, bearings, teflon seals, rectifiers, etc., the hole banana) but I was patient and collected the parts over about a year. I think I spent about $75. There is a seller on ePay that lists lots of parts on a regular basis. They even sell new stators and rotors from time to time ($$). To test the unit, I run it wide open (regulator removed) on the testing machine by grounding out one of the brushes (for a few seconds of course). They will draw over 100 amps easily.

So how do you adjust the voltage? I think my five ton is low as the gage never gets into the green. If I slave to the duece its in the green. Thats with 4 neww batts.

On the top of the alt, near the wire cover there should be a brass plug that will use an alan wrench to remove it. Under that it the "pot" to adjust the output up or down.

Sorry about the fuzzy pic, my camera isn't that good and sometimes does this.

Any who.....under this allen screw(take it out) is a small pot as it is called and you can turn the screw in it, very very very little. I think it only makes about 1 turn in total from max to min so a little goes a long way. If you wipe off any dirt that might be there on the cover you will see an arrow that points in one direction which increases(I believe it is clockwise).

Also if you don't recognize where this is, it is right next to the cover that the wires hook up under.
