Looking for some info I have a friend that gave me a warn winch in great working order the only problem it's a 12volt Winch how hard or easy would it be to hook up to the hmmvw. Or is that something that just shouldn't be done. Any ideas or suggestions thanks guys.

Hook it up like normal, 24v won't hurt it. If your real worried maybe swap out the solenoids for 24v ones.

I am pretty sure the the motor and solenoids are 12volt only on a 12 volt warn. I suppose it would work for a while but I don't think it would last long getting twice the voltage it was rated for.

it'll work, until it doesn't work.

and the very nature of a winch is that you need it to work, when you use it, because you are stuck.

i bought a cheap harbor freight winch and a separate battery, stuck it in a boating battery box, i charge it the night before i go off road and it has enough juice for a lot of pulls. the battery fits fine behind the driver seat, one day i will make a bracket to hold the battery in place so it doesn't kill me if i wreck.

also don't be tempted to run it off one of the 12v batteries, this is called a center tap, it will drain one battery and the alternator will overcharge the other while trying to bring the lower one up.

I forgot to add I have a 200 amp alternator would hooking up to one battery would the generator have enough power to run the winch on the 12 volt side

the 12v side doesn't have the amps that the winch is going to want to draw under a load, its not meant to do that, you would be better off adding a standalone battery and charging it off the 12v, and then using the 12v from the alternator to keep that battery charged.

I have run 12v winches on 24v for a while. The last longer cause with higher voltage they require less amperage which means less heat. Heat is what kills the motor windings. You can search the world wide webs to see what others say about it if your worried, or not.

That's what I thought mike that that 12 volt side wouldn't be enough that would be just for lights and radios I guess that don't consume so much power. So gimpy Robb u were saying just hook up the winch to the first battery so it will be 24 volts.

I just said hook it up 24v. I know nothing about hmmwv charging systems or which battery does what.

I tinker with deuces and old 5tons.

i've been up to some off road places near brooksville. Croom has a motorcycle area, and some cool forest roads next to it. Theres also Richloam which is part of Withlacoochee state forest, i get stuck pretty good out there. Ocala national forest has some cool places too. There's an off road park in Ocala called "hard rock", nothing to do with the casino, they have a jeep type area with hills, obstacles, and climbs.
