Do you have the TM's so it is done right?

TM-9-2320-272-23-3-Field-Maintenance-Manual look for Work Package 0403 (WP 0403)

That will put you in a fairly close vicinity anyways I think.

The TM's are here in the TM section.

The TM is unclear / it certainly is tripping me up.
One picture says that Dampner is between the Tranny and T/C and
another says it is on the front of the front rear axle.

I also think there is a OLD and NEW style Propeller Shafts...

Maybe others can clear this up.

The damper was definitely between the drive shaft and front rear axle. I was watching just about everything they did, out of curiosity. I am glad I did. There was not a damper between the front drive shaft and front steering axle..just FYI.

I downloaded most of the TMs onto my iPad and have them with me. I think putting a 12 volt converter of some sort is going to be a top priority once I get this truck home. I knew I wouldn't have Internet access on the road but so I made sure I had the pmcs info and trouble shooting but I didn't have the one artisan listed. I used them quite a bit during the initial vehicle checks when I picked it up. My iPad was almost dead last night due to all the reading I had done. I am glad I brought chargers.

Yeah, it has been hectic and kind of spotty on some of the details. When I get home I will flesh this trip out a bit. The short, I had a front tire that was unusable after 10 hours of driving due to a large buldge on the sidewall due to dry rot checking. I had a spare for the first tire issue but forgot to put the bottle jack in with my recovery kit and had to limp it four hours in the wrong direction to get it fixed. Only commercial tire garages would touch the truck.

the second tire issue was a complete blow out of the tire while on the freeway. It was in the 90s yesterday and I guess the checking couldn't handle it trip and the heat. I have been driving between 52 and 57 mph during the trip. That is the area where the truck performs the best and doesn't struggle. It just feels good in that range. I stop and check tire and hub heat quite often. The tires did not get overly warm during previous inspections. It either got to hot due to the heat outside and age of the tire or the checking on the sidewall was worse than it looked. All previous tire checks indicated tire pressure was good. The tires were a barely warm to the touch, not hot at all. The hubs were barely warm to the touch as well.

When the second tire blew I had to call the insurance company and have the truck towed. The tow company had to disconnect the drive shaft from the front axle and front rear axle in order to tow it. When they disconnected the rear drive shaft they thought the dampener was part of the rear axle since it didn't come loose when they disconnected the drive shaft. About 10 miles down the road the driver of the second security truck following us saw the round dampener fly from under the truck, bounce across the highway and go over the cliff down into a deep gorge area fell of brush and junk. He didn't note the spot where it came off and only had a general idea of where it went. We had no luck when we went to look for it and then it got too dark to keep looking.

We we are looking again today for the dampener. Monday I am going to call around for three or four good tires and have them mounted or have the truck trailered home if I can find someone or a company that has a lowboy trailer to transport it with. None of the surrounding area tire stores are open around here on weekends. These are not normal tires anyway and most places don't carry them or can even get them brought in.

Overall i I am in good spirits. It will get worked out. I am semi-retired and on disability so I don't have a job I gotta get back to immediately. That helps keep the anxiety of the situation down a bit. Mostly, I am just tired but I know it will all work out in the end.

thanks to everyone for the input, suggestions, or just for the moral support. This site has made the recovery of this truck much easier than it would have been. The information here is overwhelming at times but after you read it a few times it all comes together and makes sense. If you are not under the gun, it comes together a little faster. I will try and keep the post a little more detailed so it makes sense when people read my posts. It makes sense to me because I am here. I need to remember you guys and gals need a little extra info to help it all make sense without guessing.

It seems you did bring the most important piece of recovery gear - a credit card with a high limit.

As agazza suggests in your other post, the most cost effective way to proceed at this point is to get the truck into storage for $50 per month and take the time to mount a fully equipped recovery expedition. I've done this in the past - tow a truck off GL's lot and let it wait for me until I have time to go get it.

Of course having it trailered home has less risk and provides immediate gratification. If you're funded for that, I can't see a downside.

As to tires, expect to spend $150-$300 for used good 14's mounted on combat rims.

You should be able to get NOS 395's with 2010 date codes for $250 each. This would necessitate changing them all out at once.

I went from tucson to st louis and back a couple months ago. I had 3 blowouts on the trip. Catastrophic failure of what looked like good tires. I got extremely lucky and had SS members close by to sell/loan me 14's on blowouts 2 and 3.

One bottle jack is ill advised. Two is what you will one day need.
The truck can fall way down at times and you will want cribbing
or two jacks to get it up to the height necessary. Also you will want
a 6' telescoping cheater for the lug nuts. I pulled ALL my lug nuts
and reinstalled w/ antisieze on the stud only and torqued w/ a
proper torque wrench. Do this BEFORE you get a flat and realize
one or two lug nuts do NOT want to come unscrewed. Be aware
of left and right threading too.

Unless you have 1 big 24V battery you need no converter. If you
have 2-4 12V batteries all's you need do is pull power from one
12V battery to an aux outlet. I found a fused aux outlet w/ two
cig lighter type outlets for my 5 ton for my phone and other 12V
on the road needs. I installed said before I left on my recovery
years? ago now.

Is there a problem using smaller tires on these 20" wheels? The ctis does not need to be hooked up. Or, depending on the lug pattern, different wheels. I imagine back spacing may be an issue but are there alternatives you guys may know about. Yes, it is buying tires I won't leave on the truck but it would be cheaper than trailering it.

I do do like the storage lot idea if the alternate tire/possibly wheel replacement just isn't doable.

I am 253 miles north of you in Regina Canada I have the 10 takeoffs from a 931 but they are 11/20 not the singles. I have 10 of them and they are almost new and in great shape and the rims are great too. If you cannot find what you really want these would get you home and would last a long time. I want $150 apiece for them. Eddy

98G has the right idea. Ditch the 14.00's for good and go to 395s. There is a never ending supply of these now and moving forward as a huge part of the military's rolling stock uses these. You need high quality nearly new rubber with a heavy truck. Should be no prob to source some on FMTV wheels and have them shipped in pronto.

I was just going to ask about the 395s. I may have found four 395, 85, 20 tires. Are those a good alt to the 1400r20?
Yes, but they aren't the same size obviously. This means you need 7 of them at once.

Here's what they look like on a 5ton...they're just a couple inches shorter than 14s.

For what it's worth I plan to change my M923A2 to 395's.

The 395s didn't pan out. The closest shipping time to get anything to me was (the shortest) 6 days. I got a call Monday morning from Greg And he was able to get me a trailer pickup in two hours if I still needed it. I said, "Yes and who do I pay?". I am home now. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions and help. I will put a more specific recovery narrative in my recovery thread...with pictures.
