What are those things

The three cylinder things to the left of the wiper motor, with the wires running through them and to the wiper motor? They look kind of like fusible links, but different. And, can these be the culprit if my wiper motor is brand new but seems to be seriously lacking power? It works, but it won't push a dusting of snow off the windshield.

If there is a bad connection, you can remove them and run without them just the same. Most likely cause of weak wipers is there is another item tapping into the power wire of the wipers and I think it is a heater for the fuel filter base.

My wipers on my 86 m1008 are real weak too and when I turn them off they just stop wherever they are on the windshield. I have to time it just right for them to stop at the bottom kinda sucks.

The stopping where they want to is a well known common GM wiper problem. My Citation (yes, I had a 1980 Citation) wipers did the same thing. My sister's '79 K5 Blazer too. One of the CUCVs we had in my Reserve unit, and the non-CUCV Blazer also had non-parking wipers.

I think parking wipers was actually a rare option on 80s GM Products (at least, once they were past warranty)

I've noted on GM vehicles that the wiper motor ground is not well-done. Some of the people I worked with had Astro vans, and the wiper motor started acting weird. We tried adding a ground wire from the wiper motor's metal shell to the chassis, and it resolved the problem on two of them.

There's also a set of metal fingers (they are called wipers, but in this context, that's confusing) under the black cover of the wiper motor gearbox. Those tell the motor when the blades are in the right position to park. You might be able to clean / adjust those fingers to restore the 'park' sensing.

What's the most common culprit of the sprayers not working (sprayed once for like 10 sec and slowly stopped)? I had real weak wipers and after lubing all the linkages in the motor and firewall they became normal (minus parking :)

Not to take away from an excellent Thread. My Wipers work well enough for this California City Slicker. The Windshield Sprayer Pump though totally lacks!

Has anyone taken these Windshiled Sprayer Pumps apart to service/rebuild? Looks like a sealed unit that cannot be serviced?

I bought a rebuild kit for my pump.....worthless. Bought a fluid bottle and pump from an 1987 K30 salvage. In 87 the pump is combined with the bottle. Bypassed the old pump and used the wiring to hook up the new pump bottle combo. Works great!

Before you do that have a look in your windscreen bottle, remove the suction hose and at the end of it remove the fine plastic filter and clean it, mine was clogged badly. Now they perform like they have taken viagra :p

I bypassed the noise filters on my wiper motor and re-grounded the motor with new wire to bare metal. MUCH faster. I also replaced all the washer hoses and cleaned the reservoir of 25 years of sludge/gunk/slime. System works great now...even for Miami rains!

Esteemed CUCV owners:

The noise reduction units were to keep the wiper motor noise from being transmitted to the radio through the electric system, as any motor's brushes create small arcs with the armiture commutator strips. They do not reduce mechanical noise which is a whole another animal. If you want noise, get either two pneumatic wiper motors on a deuce going at the same time, or four wiper motors (air) on a locomotive ditto....2cents

I am having the no washer problem as well. Can anyone point me to a tm or post on how to test the motor, I also have 2 wires hangin disconnected near the washer motor so if someone could post a pic of that area's wiring that would be absolutely great. Possibly past owner disconnected the motor due to it squirting unwanted. PS - I suck at search function forgive me.

This post managed to answer my originial question but my new question is did Civi blazers have them?

No, the "noise" is radio frequency noise since the electric motor driving the wipers is a brush type which can emit radio frequency noise. Normally, you don't hear it on your AM/FM receiver but with some military radios, it can be a problem.

Ever see the arcs and sparks from an electric hand drill? Those typically use universal, brush-type AC motors and have a lot of RF noise. Any time you see a spark, you will have RF noise.
