hi guys. I should probably know the answer to this question but im not certain so ill ask anyway. 3 weeks ago i purchased a 1969 kaiser m35a2:grin:. i drove the truck over 175 miles to my home where it is parked now. The truck performed great. it ran cool at 50-55 the whole way and i had no problems to speak of. It even got unexpectedly good gas mileage. This truck starts without hesitation immediately even when its ice cold outside. I have been very happy so far and im just waiting for something catastrophic to happen. Anyway, my question is what engine does it have. The data plate says its a 1985 depot refurbish. Im certain theres a turbo on it and that its not a whistler. The plate on the side of the motor clearly shows a D designation but it doesnt say if its an lds-465 or and ldt-465. I kno the ldt is the most recent of the multifuels, but can anyone tell me what i have based on the information ive given? I knida figured if it was a mid 80's refurb it would have the most recent motor but then again theres no telling if thats even the engine it originally started with and chances are its not. More than likely an LDT-465-1d engine. Without a pic we cannot tell you with certainty. If it's a depot rebuild, it probably does have a Continental LDT Multifuel onboard

Most likely it is a LDT. If there was not a turbo, it would be a LD. LDS-465's were in 5 tons, but there are a few (very few) released that have LDS's put in them by somebody in the past. There were also LDS-427's that were in the A1's origionally (not applicable in your case). The "C" turbo is the whistler; the "D" is not. (That is also not in the engine designation). Hope it helps.

Thx so much guys. Heres my next question. Im going to be sandblasting and painting next weekend. I was going to go ahead and change the engine oil and coolants (largely just because i figured it was a safe bet). Can you run lucas oil stabilizer in these old diesels? does it actually help at all? This thing starts and runs like a top and i dont want to do anything to hurt it. Are there any other things you guys would suggest i look at on this thing as far as preventive maintenance that is VERY VERY IMPORTANT?

Very important? Check the entire brake system. If you have the time and a little money; repack wheel bearings and inspect (rebuild) brake wheel cylinders! Best money spent in my opinion.

i will definitely add all that to the list. I was considering starting with the air system next. I know that it will generally hold air for about a day without having to air up. After that it goes low. Im not sure if thats good or not but the brakes work like a charm and the windshield wipers work great(hahahaha those things are so cool and i cant wait for it to rain). is it very difficult to repack the wheelbearings? ive never done anything like that

Yeah, the wipers/windshield seals are cool (till it rains). You should read the -10 manual. Bleed the air off after every use, don't leave it in there (water residue). Wheel bearings are very easy, just make sure you are doing them correctly.

The TMs are the first thing you should go over. Then the entire brake system should be checked. Also when you do the oil and filter change, replace your fuel filters also. Lucas oil additive is fine but make sure you use a high quality 15w40 engine oil for diesels like Shell Rotella. Make sure you check all fluid levels, axles, trans, transfer.

im assuming i can get wheel bearings from napa. I think its gonna pay off having a family member that is a high up for napa parts. Im downloading all the tm's right now sir, so thank you very much for that as well. Man i sure do love this truck. It has been one of the most satisfying hobbies i think ive had already.

Don't replace them unless there's a problem; just repack the grease in them and they will be fine.

ive downloaded them all and have already read through the operators manuals. I have to say that these have already taught me a lot. Thanks for the tm's guys. I did figure out that this is an ldt-465d motor refurbed in 1985. thx

Re pack bearings only, and new seals, engine additives work great when they are in the engine, These are tough engines, not tight tolerances for sure, 30 weight was the oil used in em for years, now mil and other experts all say 15/40. pull wheels and look for leaky cylinders, if none great but they will someday so keep a look out, these trucks love grease , grease em alot , grease is your friend :) The most over looked part on these trucks and even on this site is the drive line bolts, mainly the jack shaft, its up in the middle and its short, the bolts are known to come loose, these are tactical trucks, they need to have everything tightened on a regular basis, not a design flaw, If this jack shaft breaks loose it can come thru the floor and crack open the trans, yes it has happened to someone i know, what a mess, Find someone who knows what a MAJOR BRAKE ADJUSTMENT is and have em adjusted correctly, u will be surprised how well she stops, then 3000 miles a minor adjustment then another 3000 a major again , :) Good luck keep her happy and she will keep U happy, No truck has performed so well for so long in any military history. First, wlcome to the site from Salmon River Country.

I'll chime in here to say that BRAKES on your new 13,000lb toy are just a little bit important:wink:. To check the brake fluid , there is a little trap door in the driver's side floorboard just about where your right heel is while sitting in the seat.
Thinking here, that someone new may be tempted to check and add fluids(oil, gear lube,antifreeze etc) while checking out the new ride, that it's important to know that these trucks run DOT 5 MIL spec brake fluid. This does NOT mix with the good ol'DOT 3 you have on your garage shelf for the family Pinto.

Also important is knowing these are a single circuit brake system---one leak and no brakes.

Just a quick thought --hope this helps.
