What holds the ends into the dogbones

What holds the ends in the dog bones. how hard are they to replace?

They are a press fit. You need a hydralic press to remove and replace them.

Not that hard with the right equipment.

I have spent enough to buy a nice press replacing the the torque rod ends ends on two trailers . the shop that did the work has a huge press . I talked to the man if a 20 ton press would work he said maybe . so I never bought a press . how much pressure is needed to change a torque rod end on a 5 ton ?

I just need to know because I am going to have them pressed out of 5 ton dog bones machined down to the size of a deuce end ad then pressed back in... This way I can spread the rear ends and have bigger dog bones that aren't welded

Why? they are fine. there are so many points on that truck that could be upgraded , I really do not see how u could ever get the use of just that , U are going to have used ones pressed out ?used can also mean they went thru the stress of the first press already too. U can buy em out already from like memphis i think , U are going to shorten there life so much by having them pressed out and in again that would be 3 times , how much do U think that rubber can take.your mod will be worthless i think, just sayin..

Modifying the axle mounts to accept the larger diameter torque arm ends would be easier.

I don't think the 5 ton torque arms are that much longer than the Deuce. You'll only gain a few inches.

you don't press on the rubber, there is a metal band the the rubber is formed in, you press on the metal band, also the 5t inserts in the torque arms ONLY go in/out from one side, not both on each end. I beleive the -34 tm covers this, if not the -20 does

I would use 5t axle torque arm mounts, and if needed machine the frame mounts, or have a spacer ring made so you could use a deuce insert in a 5t arm.

I wonder how much 5 ton bogie assemblies without axles go for. From my understanding they are identical in design as the Deuce, just bigger. I think a 5 ton bogie with Deuce axles could be a viable solution to run large tires such as 53"?

I am lucky. The SD Nat. Guard replaced all 6 on my deuce sometime before it was sent to GL. They don't have a single speck of rust or scratch on the paint.

While we are talking about dogbone bushings, I haven't changed them out on a military truck but have changed them on civilain trucks. The easiest way I've found is to remove the old ones by beating the rubber out with a hammer and then take a torch and carefully cut the metal band out (by carefully I mean without cutting into the dogbone). To press the new ones in it helps a whole bunch if you can heat the dogbone and freeze the bushing. You can heat the dogbone with a torch, oven or any other heat source. Just don't get it too hot. 200-300deg should be enough.

We usually use dry ice to freeze the bushings but liquid nitrogen would work nicely also. Even just putting it in the freezer overnight will help if that's all you've got. With heating and freezing they will go in fairly easy with a decent size press.

I've worried before that freezing the rubber would make it brittle and prone to damage durring the pressing process but what I've found out is that it goes in so much easier that you are less apt to damage it with it cold than you are at room temp.

As has been said above, when putting them in make sure you press on the metal ring and not the rubber. If you put much pressure at all on the rubber you will ruin it.

I am pretty sure that the 5 ton dog bones will aloo me to run my 14.00R20's i'm gonna do some more measuring and make sure because if they are spread apart on the frame where they mount then this wouldn't work. I will ask my machine shop if they can machine them down with out having them press out becaue that would mke it alot easier...

As for as modifying the axel mounts I'm not sure... that may be the easiest thing to to... I am pretty sure the mount that goes around the axel would be really easy to modify but I'm not so sure that it will be that easy on the frame. If the holes were not tapered then it would be no problem and still might not be a problem for a machine shop.

NICE! things like that are very sweet to find ... I lost one in some deep mud and woods a few years ago, I pushed it back in the hole used a rachet strap to hold it there and 6 wheeled the rest of the day no prob, sure is nice to have a new set, I do not think they go all that often though...

the top TWO let go a lot faster then the lowers, so if you loose one upper, change them BOTH

Going this weekend to pick-up 6 5-Ton dog bones and and the mounts that go around the axel housing. He said $20 a peice and i could pick-em and take em off. Does that sound to high?
