The registration number is the military's equivalent to a license plate number. Each truck is assigned an unique number upon acceptance by the various branches. Army wheeled vehicles begin with "N".

Hmmm, didn't read post #1 on the vin info thread.

Couldn't do the little bubble thingies showing internal mental thought.

CARNAC, "Hmmm, didn't read post #1 on the vin info thread."

I did read the post if this is what you are referring to. "NLOVHK" is all alpha characters, no numbers.. my vehicle is ser number 23/followed by numbers.. This MFR doesn't address or list 6 alpha characters only, unless I missed something..

Thanks again.

MEMORANDUM FOR RECORD
Subject: M939/A1/A2 and M939A1P1/A2P1 Serial Number Sequences

1. The serial number (SN) prefix for the AM General M939/A1 and M939A1P1 is “C5” followed by the vehicle model, i.e., C523. This truck is either a M923 or a M923A1. Each vehicle has a unique USA/Registration Number. Examples of this are below. If the dataplate is missing you can locate the SN on the driver’s side front frame rail (you may have to scrape paint away in order to fully see it).

2. The SN prefix for the BMY M939A2 and M939A2P1 can be somewhat confusing. Following are the various types:

a. Initially the SN was intended to correspond to the contract CLIN numbers. i.e., 1001AA001. This method quickly became unmanageable.

b. The next SN type was the “vehicle number”, i.e., 23/00845, 36/04578. This method was intended for the Active Army, ARNG, USAR and Foreign Military Sales (FMS) cases.

c. The next SN type was the “vehicle number, letter A”, i.e., 23A/1245, 34A/0021 or 31A/1244

d. Another SN type was the “vehicle number, letter F or N”, i.e., 23F/1266 , 29F/3211, 28N/3233 and 25N/1211. This method was intended for the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Air Force.
3. The above is intended to be general guidance and not fast and hard rules. For every rule there are exceptions.

NLOVHK" is all alpha characters, no numbers..
That is likely 'NL-zero-VHK'. It would be the Army's registration number for that particular vehicle, like its license plate, as Alexsha and NDT said.
This number is assigned by the Army, not the manufacturer, and is separate from the serial number. Some vehicles have the registration number on the data plate, most do not.
The same number should not be stenciled on more than one vehicle though.

Clear as mud? :)

Cheers

Why NL, looks, more to NI to me. All the posts mention the letters in capitals, so if that is the standard, it looks more a capital I then a capital L.

NL is the abbreviation for Nederland, or the Netherlands :p

Ain't no O in registration numbers. Don't care what you think it is, it is a zero. Doesn't matter what it looks like...it's a zero. Same goes with military VIN's--no O it is a 0 (zero).

BTW this only applies to former Army MV's, the other services use different systems for their registration numbers.

On my deuce they put the registration number on the doors but on the data plate they put the reg number and frame number to make a 17 digit VIN. That made things easier. My truck came from the SDNG and the reg number has no letters.

A no letter registration number is highly unusual. Interesting.
