Wheel lubing sight glass?

Was not sure if this was the right place to post. I have a front wheel on a tanker truck that has this cap allowing to sight the lubing, one used for trailer wheels too, I was told. I was not sure how that works and how to fill it up or maintain it. A trucker dude said if it is not lubed right it could catch on fire.

They have a fill or add line generally.

Pull the plug. Fill with fluid and add till the fluid is just below the lip of the plug.


It may take a bit to fill up level if it's bone dry

And if the plug seems to start slinging oil out of the hub take a tooth pick and clean the little hole in the center of the red rubber plug just shove it all the way thru and clean it so it can vent when the oil heats up along with the hubs and drums/rotors

The plugs get hard over time and can cause the clear plastic to break when removing or pushing the p[lug back in I tried to keep them fresh to avoid this from happening

Like everybody else mentioned, gear oil and that "sight glass" should be clear so you can walk by the wheels on your pre-trip and visually see the oil in the hubs. Definitely the way to go for easy maintenance. The rubber plugs come in different colors according to who made them and when. I have seen Red, Green and Black. They all do the same thing (serve the same purpose).

The glass is so blurry I cannot even see if there is any oil or not. I drove it last 10 hours no issues but I will need to look it up seriously now.

Guess you would have known if there was a problem. It's plastic, so you know how that works. Better if you know - but it worked - Right?

I had had some bad experiences when I pulled out the plug and the face cracked. Oil drooling down onto the rim. Bad day. Better to leave it alone than messing with it sometimes. :-( The replacement parts should last as long as you have the trailer. :cool:

When gear oil was not around I have used STP oil treatment as lube and a rag with duct tape or electrical tape to patch the broken plastic .

Some caps don't have plastic disks that can be changed out the whole thing has to be replaced .

When I came across a trailer with a old hard rubber plug and a plastic I could not see the lube oil or every thing was old and sun baked I did not want to risk breaking any thing by removing the plug I just unbolted the whole thing and filled it with gear oil or STP and bolt it back on .
